The New Norm: Trend Micro Security Predictions for 2020

As cybersecurity moves into a new decade and towards a more complex future, we’ve identified the trends you need to know about to inform your cybersecurity strategy.

March 18, 2020

Trend Micro Research experts provide you with informed insights into the future landscape driven by technological advances and evolved threats, allowing you to make informed decisions on your cybersecurity posture in 2020 and beyond.

At Trend Micro Research, we keep constant watch over the threat landscape. Our researchers compile and analyze massive amounts of raw threat data available from a wide range of sources, including the 250+ million sensors in the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network™. We investigate the reported attacks and actors, and we map them against on the evolving IT infrastructure to predict where cybersecurity needs to be tomorrow. We use purpose-built artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to look beyond the known threat patterns and synthesize the scenarios likely to appear on the horizon. Then we organize our work into categories that make it easy to add our predictions into your cybersecurity plans and share it all in our annual Security Predictions Report.

The Future is Complex, Exposed, Misconfigured
Although the cloud has opened doors for organizations via scalability, access to automatic updates, and reduced IT costs, threat actors will continue to take advantage of this platform. One Code injection attacks, either directly to the code or through a third-party library, will be prominently used against cloud platforms. Inserted into code through third-party libraries and downloaded by unsuspecting users, this malware allows cybercriminals to eavesdrop, take control of, and modify data and files stored within an organization’s cloud. To defend against cloud compromises like One Code injection attacks will require equal persistence and attention from developers, provider, and users.

But It Is Also Defensible
Cybercriminals will become even more organized and stealthy throughout 2020 and beyond. They will be better equipped to take advantage of the budding cloud platform, the current cybersecurity skills shortage, as well as the startling number of vulnerabilities that come from poor security hygiene. But cybersecurity is constantly evolving to keep up with the latest threats, while threat insights and SaaS-based security protection has become more assessable to organizations than ever before. By infusing actionable threat intelligence into security and risk management processes, businesses will be able to proactively defend their environments by identifying security gaps, eliminating weak links, and understanding attacker strategies. A greater context beyond the endpoint—encompassing email, server, cloud workloads, and networks—presents decision-makers and IT managers with a better picture of their online infrastructures and greater access to experts, such as security operations center (SOC) analysts, who can correlate their findings with global threat intelligence.

The future looks complex, exposed, and misconfigured — but it is also defensible. Learn what’s to come and how you can get ready for the future with The New Norm: Trend Micro Security Predictions for 2020.
