Kryptokriminalität im Jahr 2023, Teil 1
Ein neuer Bericht zu Kryptokriminalität macht einen Trend zu deren Rückgang aus. Allerdings stellen illegale Transaktionen mit sanktionierten Einrichtungen immer noch einen erheblichen Teil dieser Aktivitäten dar.
Als Kryptokriminalität werden alle kriminellen Aktivitäten bezeichnet, die sich auf die Verwendung von Kryptowährungen beziehen. Dazu gehören Diebstahl, Betrug, Geldwäsche und andere illegale Aktivitäten. Kryptowährungen wie Bitcoin und Ethereum werden in dezentralen Netzwerken eingesetzt und nicht von einer zentralen Behörde ausgegeben oder kontrolliert. Dies macht sie aufgrund ihrer Anonymität und fehlenden Regulierung zu einem attraktiven Ziel für Kriminelle.
Der Chainalysis Crypto Crime Report 2024 beschreibt die verschiedenen Arten von Krypto-Kriminalität und ihre Auswirkungen.
2023 sank der Wert der von illegalen Adressen erhaltenen Kryptowährungstransaktionen deutlich auf 24,2 Mrd. US-Dollar. Diese Zahl ist jedoch eine untere Grenze der Schätzung und steigt wahrscheinlich, wenn mehr illegale Adressen identifiziert werden. So wuchs das geschätzte illegale Transaktionsvolumen 2022 aufgrund der Identifizierung neuer illegaler Adressen und sanktionierter Dienste von 20,6 Mrd. auf 39,6 Mrd. Dollar.
Ein wichtiger Faktor für die revidierte Gesamtsumme für 2022 war die Einbeziehung von 8,7 Mrd. Dollar an Gläubigerforderungen gegen FTX nach der Verurteilung des ehemaligen CEO wegen Betrugs. Dies ist eine Ausnahme von der üblichen On-Chain-Methode zur Messung illegaler Aktivitäten, da es für FTX schwierig ist, betrügerische On-Chain-Bewegungen von Nutzergeldern zu isolieren.
Die Zahlen für 2023 enthalten auch keine Transaktionen aus nicht kryptobasierten Straftaten wie Drogenhandel, da es schwierig ist, diese von legitimen On-Chain-Transaktionen zu unterscheiden. Die Strafverfolgungsbehörden können diese Ströme jedoch mithilfe von Tools wie Chainalysis-Lösungen in einem Off-Chain-Kontext untersuchen.
Umfang der Kryptokriminalität 2023
In den letzten zwei Jahren haben Stablecoins Bitcoin als bevorzugte Kryptowährung für Cyberkriminelle verdrängt und sind für die meisten illegalen Transaktionen verantwortlich. Diese Verschiebung verläuft parallel zum steigenden Anteil von Stablecoins an der gesamten Kryptowährungsaktivität, einschließlich legitimer Transaktionen. Allerdings bleibt Bitcoin bei bestimmten Krypto-Kriminalitäten, wie z. B. Verkäufen auf dem Darknet-Markt und Ransomware-Erpressung, dominant.
Die wichtigsten Formen der Kryptokriminalität nach Transaktionsvolumen, wie Betrug und Transaktionen mit sanktionierten Einrichtungen, haben sich weitgehend auf Stablecoins verlagert. Einrichtungen in sanktionierten Ländern oder solche, die in die Terrorismusfinanzierung verwickelt sind, bevorzugen Stablecoins aufgrund ihrer Stabilität und ihres einfachen Zugangs im Vergleich zu den traditionellen US-Dollar-Routen. Dennoch können Stablecoin-Emittenten eingreifen, wie das Einfrieren von Adressen, die mit Terrorismus und Kriegsführung in Israel und der Ukraine in Verbindung stehen, durch Tether zeigt.
Wichtige Trends
Hier sind drei wichtige Trends, die sich im Jahr 2023 in der Kryptokriminalität abzeichnen:
- Betrug und gestohlene Gelder waren rückläufig: 2023 gingen die Einnahmen aus Krypto-Betrug und -Hacking deutlich zurück. Die illegalen Einnahmen aus Betrug sanken um 29,2 % und aus Hacking um 54,3 %. Betrüger wandten zunehmend „Romance“-Betrugstaktiken angewandt, die auf Einzelpersonen abzielen, anstatt weit verbreitete Werbung zu nutzen. Dadurch sind diese Scams schwerer zu erkennen. Trotz zunehmender Berichte über Krypto-Investitionsbetrug in den USA bis 2022 zeigen die globalen On-Chain-Metriken einen Abwärtstrend bei den Betrugseinnahmen seit 2021, was wahrscheinlich auf die Marktdynamik zurückzuführen ist, die Betrug begünstigt.
- Krypto-Hacking ist schwieriger zu verbergen, da ungewöhnliche Abflüsse aus Diensten oder Protokollen schnell bemerkt werden. Der Rückgang der gestohlenen Gelder ist hauptsächlich auf einen deutlichen Rückgang der DeFi-Hacks zurückzuführen, was möglicherweise auf verbesserte Sicherheitspraktiken innerhalb der DeFi-Protokolle hinweist. Allerdings beeinflussen Ausreißer die Metriken zu gestohlenen Geldern, und ein einziger großer Hack könnte den Trend ändern.
- Zunehmende Aktivitäten bei Ransomware und im Darknet: 2023 stiegen die Einnahmen aus Ransomware- und Darknet-Märkten entgegen dem allgemeinen Trend. Die höheren Ransomware-Einnahmen deuten darauf hin, dass sich die Angreifer an die verbesserten Cybersicherheitsmaßnahmen angepasst haben. In ähnlicher Weise stiegen die Einnahmen des Darknet-Marktes nach einem Rückgang 2022, der in erster Linie auf die Schließung von Hydra zurückzuführen war, dem dominierenden Markt, der einst über 90 % der Darknet-Einnahmen für sich beanspruchte. Obwohl es keinen einzigen Markt gibt, der Hydra ersetzt, erholt sich der Sektor insgesamt und nähert sich den Höchstständen von 2021.
- Transaktionen mit sanktionierten Einrichtungen sind die Hauptursache für illegale Aktivitäten: 2023 waren Transaktionen im Zusammenhang mit Sanktionen ein herausragender Trend bei illegalen Kryptowährungsaktivitäten, die 14,9 Mrd. US-Dollar oder 61,5 % des gesamten illegalen Transaktionsvolumens ausmachten. Dies wurde in erster Linie von Kryptowährungsdiensten getrieben, die vom Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) des US-Finanzministeriums oder in sanktionierten Ländern sanktioniert wurden und aufgrund der fehlenden lokalen Durchsetzung von US-Sanktionen weiter operieren.
Ein erheblicher Teil dieses Volumens betrifft durchschnittliche Krypto-Nutzer in diesen Ländern. So trug beispielsweise die in Russland ansässige Börse Garantex, die von der OFAC und der britischen OFSI wegen Erleichterung von Geldwäsche und Ransomware-Aktivitäten sanktioniert wurde, erheblich zu diesem Volumen bei.
Fazit
Da Kryptowährungen immer mehr an Akzeptanz und Interesse gewinnen, ist der Trend zu einem Rückgang der Kryptokriminalität eine positive Entwicklung. Allerdings machen illegale Transaktionen mit sanktionierten Einrichtungen immer noch einen erheblichen Teil dieser Aktivitäten aus.
