Stopping Attacks on Connected Cars Hannover Messe
At 2018’s Hannover Messe, one of the world’s largest industrial technology trade fairs, Trend Micro showcased cybersecurity solutions for cloud applications, smart factories, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
According to a recent study, the global connected car market will exceed $329 billion by 2023. Back in 2015, Gartner had already predicted that by 2020, one in five vehicles will have some form of wireless network connection. Connected cars have already hit the road, and their numbers will rise to 250 million if these forecasts come true.
This major technological change comes with big new risks. An autonomous Uber vehicle already recently killed a pedestrian in Arizona.
Can you imagine driving in a car on the highway if a hacker could disconnect the brakes by remote control and lock you inside? What if an attacker switched your car into reverse as you tried to pull away from a traffic light? The frightening possibilities seem limitless.
Security for Connected Cars at Hannover Messe 2018
At this year's Hannover Messe, one of the world's largest industrial technology trade fairs, Trend Micro showcased cybersecurity solutions for cloud applications, smart factories, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In cooperation with Objective Software, Trend Micro also presented a special security demonstration for connected cars.
The presentation first showed the potential of tele-operated driving and how drivers would control vehicles in normal traffic conditions. Visitors then learned how to gain remote access to a vehicle's steering controls and other systems.

After seeing the potential for mischief, attendees had the chance to witness how Trend Micro for IoT Security (TMIS) can protect connected vehicles. The TMIS dashboard makes hackers attempting to access car systems to install malicious software clearly visible.
