It drops and executes the following files:

  • {malware directory}\worm.exe → attempts to bypass a wireless local area network (WLAN) and spread service.exe in connected devices

Autostart Technique

This Worm starts the following services:

  • {malware directory}\service.exe → this file is started as a service in infected devices

Backdoor Routine

This Worm posts the following information to its command and control (C&C) server:

    • c={wireless network}:{password} → Passwords that successfully established a connection to a network

  • Credentials that successfully established connection are sent back to the C&C server
  • Enumerates all network resources and all users connected to the resource and attempts to connect to the users
  • Attempts to connect to the admin account of the network resource if the previous attempt failed
  • After successful connection, the malware attempts to connect to C$\ share to have access to drive C of specified users and spread service.exe as my.exe
      It adds the dropped file as service with the following details
    • Service name: Windows Defender System Service
    • Display name: WinDefService
    • Path: C:\\my.exe
    • Start type: SERVICE_AUTO_START

Step 1

Trend Micro Predictive Machine Learning detects and blocks malware at the first sign of its existence, before it executes on your system. When enabled, your Trend Micro product detects this malware under the following machine learning name:

    Troj.Win32.TRX.XXPE50FFF033

Step 2

Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 3

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Identify and terminate files detected as Worm.Win32.EMOTET.AA

  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
