Other Details
This Rootkit does the following:
- It creates a symbolic link accessible to user-mode applications, enabling attackers to issue commands or control the driver directly.
- It locates the driver tcpip.sys then modifies the driver to potentially alter network behavior or inject malicious code.
- It minimizes activity by disconnecting the symbolic link and unloading its driver after its malicious usage.
It does not exploit any vulnerability.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as Rootkit.Win32.DOWNAD.A. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
