This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %User Temp%\_{Random 1}.exe -> modified copy

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It drops the following files:

  • %User Temp%\_{Random 2}.exe -> PsExec.exe (Normal File)
  • C:\Users\Public\{Hex Characters}

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.)

It drops and executes the following files:

  • %User Temp%\_{Random 3}.exe -> detected as TROJ_DESBACK.A
  • %User Temp%\{Random 1}.exe -> detected as TSPY_BROWPASS.D (Browser Credential Stealer)
  • %User Temp%\{Random 2}.exe -> detected as TSPY_MALSASS.A (System Credential Stealer)

It adds the following processes:

  • %User Temp%\{Random 1}.exe 123 \.\pipe\{Pipe Name}
  • %User Temp%\{Random 2}.exe 123 \.\pipe\{Pipe Name}

Backdoor Routine

This Trojan does not have any backdoor routine.

Other Details

This Trojan does the following:

  • It searches for available networks then uses PsExec to propagate remotely through the said networks.
  • It uses the following credentials for the remote connection:
    • Hardcoded Credentials
    • Credentials gathered using the executed credential stealers

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as TROJ_OLYMPICDESTROYER.A

  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
