This Trojan downloads the file from the following URL and renames the file when stored in the affected system:
- http://{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.27/bins/mirai.x86
It saves the files it downloads using the following names:
- {Malware Path}/sshd

This Trojan does not have any information-stealing capability.
Other Details
This Trojan does the following:
- It prints "MIRAI" identification banner to stdout during execution.
- It prints "NIF" error message on network interface failure.
- It prints "FIN" completion message after successful download.
However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.
It does not exploit any vulnerability.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Trend Micro Predictive Machine Learning detects and blocks malware at the first sign of its existence, before it executes on your system. When enabled, your Trend Micro product detects this malware under the following machine learning name:
- Troj.ELF.TRX.XXELFC1DFF055
Step 2
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as Trojan.Linux.MIRAI.NLJ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
