This Virus arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It adds infection markers to files.

Arrival Details

This Virus arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Virus drops the following files:

  • %Application Data%\APMV\APMV.exe.id - Victim ID
  • %Application Data%\APMV\APMV.exe.flag - Marker
  • %Application Data%\APMV\APMV.exe.dat - Timestamp

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %Application Data%\APMV\APMV.exe
  • %User Temp%\{Random Capital Letters}

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).. %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit).)

It creates the following folders:

  • %Application Data%\APMV

It terminates itself if it finds the following processes in the affected system's memory:

  • taskmgr.exe

Autostart Technique

This Virus drops the following shortcut pointing to its copy in the User Startup folder to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

  • %All Users Profile%\APMV.lnk

(Note: %All Users Profile% is the common user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\All Users on Windows 2000(32-bit), XP, and Server 2003(32-bit), or C:\ProgramData on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2008(64-bit), 2012(64-bit) and 10(64-bit). )

Other System Modifications

This Virus deletes the following files:

  • %Windows%\desk.cpl
  • %Windows%\sxs.dll
  • %Windows%\xpsp2res.dll
  • %Windows%\fastsmell.exe
  • %System%\ntos.exe
  • If it has the following filenames:
    • rasadhlp.dll
    • mcenspc.dll
    • msvcrt57.dll
    • Kbrero.exe
    • Ubrery.exe
    • zeiaiz.exe
    • bsysmgr.exe.
    • enfcspl.dll
    • setupapi.dll
    • sdra64.exe
    • twex.exe

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, where it usually is C:\Windows on all Windows operating system versions.. %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

This Virus infects the following file types:

It adds infection markers to files.

Other Details

This Virus does the following:

  • It accepts the following arguments:
    • -autorun → Perform its infection routines
  • If run without arguments it will create its autostart and delete the listed files. The deleted files will be deleted after a reboot has been performed.
  • It infects files by:
    • Encoding the target file. Appending it to its own code and then writing it back to its target file.
  • It adds the following to its infected files as infection marker:
    • -=supernatural=-
  • It avoids infecting files from drives:
    • Where the drive type is CD-ROM, UNKNOWN or NO ROOT DRIVE.
    • Where System Volume Infomation exists.
  • If Delphi is installed in the machine:
    • It will look for the following files:
      • bin\dcc32.exe
      • lib\sysinit.dcu
      • rtl\sys\system.pas
    • If found it will drop the following file (If it doesnt exist):
      • {source directory}\Defines.inc → contains malicious code in array form
    • It writes code to rtl\sys\sysinit.pas to load the malicious code from Defines.inc.
    • Then it will execute the following command to compile Delphi libraries with inserted malicious code:
      • {Delphi installation path}\­bin\­dcc32.exe –Q &{Delphi installation path}\­rtl\­sys\­System.pas& –M –Y –Z -$D- -0

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Note that not all files, folders, and registry keys and entries are installed on your computer during this malware's/spyware's/grayware's execution. This may be due to incomplete installation or other operating system conditions. If you do not find the same files/folders/registry information, please proceed to the next step.

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as Virus.Win32.INDUC.A.orig

  1. Windows Task Manager may not display all running processes. In this case, please use a third-party process viewer, preferably Process Explorer, to terminate the malware/grayware/spyware file. You may download the said tool here.
  2. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  3. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.

Restore this file from backup only Microsoft-related files will be restored. If this malware/grayware also deleted files related to programs that are not from Microsoft, please reinstall those programs on you computer again.

Step 6

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as Virus.Win32.INDUC.A.orig. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
