Arrival Details

This Trojan may be unknowingly downloaded by a user while visiting malicious websites.

It may be dropped by the following malware:

  • TROJ_PDFKA.DP
  • TROJ_PDFKA.DQ
  • TROJ_PIDIEF.DVD

Installation

This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %User Temp%\adobeupd.exe

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It drops the following files:

  • %User Startup%\Adobe Center.lnk
  • %System Root%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Adobe Center.lnk

(Note: %User Startup% is the current user's Startup folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup on Windows NT, and C:\Documents and Settings\{User name}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.. %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • HTTPW-GNIK
  • MAINHTTP
  • RMTCURR

Download Routine

This Trojan connects to the following malicious URLs:

  • bbc.{BLOCKED}bs.com
  • {BLOCKED}otel.3-a.net

NOTES:
It is related to a spam run targeting participants of the 2011 Annual Meeting of the New Champions at the World Economic Forum.

It attempts to access the abovementioned URL to possibly download and execute other malware. It attempts to send the infected computer's system information (host name and MAC address) to the URL as well. However, during testing, it was unable to download other files.

Upon execution, this Trojan checks if the currently running file is %User Temp%\adobeupd.EXE. If not, it creates its copy in %User Temp% folder then executes it, and deletes the initially executed file.

It also attempts to execute the following, but is non-existent:

  • tTrp.cgi
