This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It accesses websites to download files. This action allows this malware to possibly add other malware on the affected computer.

Arrival Details

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Autostart Technique

This Trojan creates the following registry entries to enable automatic execution of dropped component at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
startrum = "startrum.cpl"

Download Routine

This Trojan accesses websites to download the following files:

  • http://{BLOCKED}mau.info/PerfLogs/R_Perf/02/FishFactsMapping.bck

It saves the files it downloads using the following names:

  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\FishFactsMapping.bck

(Note: %Application Data% is the current user's Application Data folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Application Data on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming on Windows Vista and 7.)

NOTES:

The downloaded file %Application Data%\UserProfile\FishFactsMapping.bck contains the following files:

  • adobflasplay.cpl detected as TROJ_CHEPRO.BBC
  • bck.bck
  • fishfactsmapping.xml
  • startrum.cpl detected as TROJ_INJECT.CAC
  • svchort.drv
  • taskhost.drv

It then extracts the said files as the following:

  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\adobflasplay.cpl
  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\bck.bck
  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\fishfactsmapping.xml
  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\startrum.cpl
  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\svchort.drv
  • %Application Data%\UserProfile\taskhost.drv

After extracting the files, the downloaded file %Application Data%\UserProfile\FishFactsMapping.bck is deleted.

It reboots the system. Once it restarts, the created autorun registry by the malware runs. As result, malicious routines of these files are exhibited on the affected system.

Minimum Scan Engine: 9.700

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by TROJ_BANLOAD.APS. (Note: Please skip this step if the threat(s) listed below have already been removed.)

     
    • TROJ_CHEPRO.BBC
    • TROJ_INJECT.CAC

Step 3

Delete this registry value

Step 4

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_BANLOAD.APS. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
