NOTES:
This backdoor has several command-line components which are used to monitor the client and server connections, as well as modify the connection settings. One of the components accepts parameters to change the controller and destination IP/port:

  • {malware name} ctrlPort ServerPort
  • {malware name} Port Dest_IP Port
  • {malware name} ctrlIP ctrlPort Dest_IP Port

If the connection is successful, it can act as an intermediary component that forwards commands from the client to the server and vice versa.

If the backdoor's connection to the specified C&C server is successful, it can accept shell commands and execute them via command line, giving the remote user full control of the affected system.

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Identify and terminate files detected as BKDR_HUPIGON.DLI

  1. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  2. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.

Step 3

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as BKDR_HUPIGON.DLI. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
