Scammers Use Pinterest's Name in Spam Campaign

 Analysis by: Chloe Ordonia

Pinterest is a pinboard-styled social photo sharing website which is slowly gaining popularity. With over 10.4 million registered users, spammers are now riding on its popularity.

We recently intercepted a spammed message disguising itself as an email about a giveaway from Pinterest. It asks for the recipient's opinion about the social photo sharing site and promises a gift upon completing the form. In the email are also random words. However, clicking the 'Start Here' button redirects to a lottery website that isn't connected to Pinterest. The lottery site is suspected to have been created with the intention of gathering users' personal information.

Beware of threats leveraging popular social networking sites as an effective lure for cybercrime.
