Yahoo! and Windows Live Scam Found

 Analysis by: Jude Bordallo

TrendLabs engineers found spammers using Yahoo! and Windows Live as bait for users. The spammed messages bear the subject, CONGRATULATION! CONGRATULATION!! CONGRATULATION!!! to entice users to open the attached .DOC file. The document informs users that their email address won a monthly online lottery with a prize of two million pounds. It also indicates that both Yahoo! and Windows Live sponsored the prize money to convince users that it is legitimate.

Furthermore, the document indicates that the prize must be claimed not later than 30 days from the draw date, after which the prize money will be forfeited. It also contains the name and contact information to claim the prize money. However, this is a tactic to lure users in participating in the scam. Instead of gaining money, users may just lose it because of the expenses that go into the process of transferring the said prize money. Users are advised to be wary in opening their email even if they appear to come from known sources.
