This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This spyware drops the following files:

  • %System%\{random file name 1}.dll - also detected as TSPY64_KEYLOG.OF
  • %System%\{random file name 2}.dat - encrypted file

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System32.)

Other System Modifications

This spyware modifies the following registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\
Services\AppMgmt\Parameters
ServiceDll = "%System%\{random file name 1}.dll"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%System%\appmgmts.dll".)

Dropping Routine

This spyware drops the following file(s), which it uses for its keylogging routine:

  • %Windows%\Temp\{random file name 3}.tmp - contains encrypted key logs

(Note: %Windows% is the Windows folder, which is usually C:\Windows.)

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product and note files detected as TSPY64_KEYLOG.OF

Step 3

Restart in Safe Mode

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TSPY64_KEYLOG.OF. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
