This Trojan moves the files from the folder %User Profile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch to the created folder %User Temp%\smtmp\2.

It modifies the attributes of files found in the affected system into Hidden, to trick the users that the files have been deleted.

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It deletes itself after execution.

Arrival Details

This Trojan arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %System Root%\All Users\Application Data\{random filename}.exe

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %User Temp%\smtmp
  • %User Temp%\smtmp\2

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

Autostart Technique

This Trojan adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

  • In the Look In drop-down list, select My Computer, then press Enter.
  • Once located, select the folder then press SHIFT+DELETE to permanently delete the folder.
  • Repeat the said steps for all folders listed.

    Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as TROJ_FAKESYSD.AJ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
