This file infector arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It infects files by overwriting code in the entry point and saving the overwritten code in the virus body. It then appends the virus body to the host file.

This file infector arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

File Infection

This file infector overwrites code found in the entry point of a target file. It then appends the virus body to the target file. The overwritten code is saved in the virus body.

It searches for target files in the following folders:

  • Current Directory
  • %Start Menu%
  • All available drive

(Note: %Start Menu% is the current user's Start Menu folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Start Menu or C:\Documents and Settings\{User name}\Start Menu on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on Windows Vista and 7.)

Information Theft

This file infector steals the following information:

  • Windows Product ID
  • Drive Volume Serial Number
  • OS Version
  • User credentials
  • FileZilla Information

Stolen Information

The stolen information is saved in the following file:

  • %Application Data%\{random filename}.dll

NOTES:

This infector creates {host file name}.vir, which contains the infected copy of the target file. Afterwards, it attempts to overwrite the target file and later deletes the created *.vir file.
