File Infection
This file infector infects the following file types:
- .EXE
- .SCR
It infects by appending its code to target host files.
It avoids infecting files that contain the following strings in their names:
- WC32
- WCUN
- WINC
- PSTO
Other Details
This file infector does the following:
- Listens to varying ports and attempts to connect to Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server, where it joins a certain channel. Once connected, it may allow a remote user to download and execute files remotely onto the affected system. This routine effectively compromises the affected system's security.
SOLUTION
Step 1
Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.
Step 2
Terminate a process file/s detected as PE_VIRUT.AT
*Note: If the detected file/s is/are not displayed in theWindows Task Manager, continue doing the next steps.
Step 3
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as PE_VIRUT.AT. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
