  OVERVIEW

This file infector arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.

  TECHNICAL DETAILS

File Size: 101,088 bytes
File Type: EXE
Memory Resident: Yes
Initial Samples Received Date: 07 Jan 2009

Arrival Details

This file infector may arrive via network shares.

It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This file infector drops and executes the following files:

  • %System Root%\z1.tmp - detected as TROJ_ROOTER.AACZ

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

It drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %System%\drivers\TXPlatform.exe

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

It drops the following non-malicious file:

  • %System Root%\GK.TMP

(Note: %System Root% is the root folder, which is usually C:\. It is also where the operating system is located.)

Autostart Technique

This file infector adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Explorer = "%System%\drivers\TXPlatform.exe"

Other System Modifications

This file infector modifies the following registry entries:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\shell\
open\command
@ = ""%Program Files%\InternetExplorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is "%Program Files%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome.)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer
NoDriveTypeAutoRun = "80"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is 91.)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folder\Hidden\
SHOWALL
CheckedValue = "0"

(Note: The default value data of the said registry entry is 1.)

Propagation

This file infector drops the following copy of itself in all physical and removable drives:

  • [DRIVE]:\¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

[autorun]
OPEN=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe
shell\open={garbage code}
shell\open\Command=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe
shell\open\Default=1
shell\explore={garbage code}
shell\explore\Command=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe

Other Details

This file infector connects to the following possibly malicious URL:

  • http://www.{BLOCKED}gou.com/goto/down.txt
  • http://www.{BLOCKED}s.com/TJ.Htm

However, as of this writing, the said sites are inaccessible.

NOTES:

It infects all executeable files found in shared folders. Infected files are detected by Trend Micro as PE_AGATDUL.A.

It drops the following file in the found shared folders as an infection marker:

  • Desktop_1.ini
Installation

It creates the following IFEO registries to disable certain applications:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
Debugger = "ntsd -d"

  SOLUTION

Minimum Scan Engine: 8.900
VSAPI OPR PATTERN File: 5.755.00
VSAPI OPR PATTERN Date: 07 Jan 2009

Step 1

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Step 2

Remove malware files dropped/downloaded by PE_AGATDUL.A-O

     PE_AGATDUL.A
    TROJ_ROOTER.AACZ

Step 3

Identify and terminate files detected as PE_AGATDUL.A-O

[ Learn More ]
  1. If the detected file is displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer but you cannot delete it, restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, refer to this link for the complete steps.
  2. If the detected file is not displayed in either Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer, continue doing the next steps.

Step 4

Search and delete these files

[ Learn More ]
There may be some component files that are hidden. Please make sure you check the Search Hidden Files and Folders checkbox in the "More advanced options" option to include all hidden files and folders in the search result.
  • %System Root%\GK.TMP
  • [Shared folder]\Desktop_1.ini

Step 5

Delete this registry value

[ Learn More ]

Important: Editing the Windows Registry incorrectly can lead to irreversible system malfunction. Please do this step only if you know how or you can ask assistance from your system administrator. Else, check this Microsoft article first before modifying your computer's registry.

  • In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    • Explorer = "%System%\drivers\TXPlatform.exe"
  • In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
    • Debugger = "ntsd -d"

Step 6

Delete this registry key

[ Learn More ]

Important: Editing the Windows Registry incorrectly can lead to irreversible system malfunction. Please do this step only if you know how or you can ask assistance from your system administrator. Else, check this Microsoft article first before modifying your computer's registry.

  • In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
    • {application name}

Step 7

Restore this modified registry value

[ Learn More ]

Important: Editing the Windows Registry incorrectly can lead to irreversible system malfunction. Please do this step only if you know how or you can ask assistance from your system administrator. Else, check this Microsoft article first before modifying your computer's registry.

  • In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\shell\open\command
    • From: @ = ""%Program Files%\InternetExplorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome"
      To: @ = ""%Program Files%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome"
  • In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    • From: NoDriveTypeAutoRun = "80"
      To: NoDriveTypeAutoRun = "91"
  • In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
    • From: CheckedValue = "0"
      To: CheckedValue = "1"

Step 8

Search and delete AUTORUN.INF files created by PE_AGATDUL.A-O that contain these strings

[ Learn More ]
[autorun]
OPEN=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe
shell\open={garbage code}
shell\open\Command=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe
shell\open\Default=1
shell\explore={garbage code}
shell\explore\Command=¡¡¡¡¡¡.exe

Step 9

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as PE_AGATDUL.A-O. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
