Network Associates and Trend Micro Settle Antivirus Software Patent Dispute

Cupertino, CA, - June 1, 2000 - Trend Micro Inc. and Network Associates announced today that they have settled their patent disputes and cross-licensed their patent portfolios, ending all pending federal lawsuits. Both parties' patent infringement lawsuits will be dismissed as a result of the settlement between the two leading anti-virus companies.

"Network Associates has demonstrated technology leadership in the industry with 23 issued patents, over 80 pending patents, and even more in the patent pipeline," said Jeff Jones, Product Manager of McAfee, a Network Associates business. "We are very satisfied with the settlement and plan to continue the vigorous protection of our technology assets against patent infringement."

The Trend Micro lawsuit focused on its patent issued in 1997 concerning scanning for viruses in electronic mail and Internet data transfers. The Network Associates lawsuit focused on its patent issued in 2000 concerning concentrated on embedding anti-virus technology into Internet and network applications. The settlement enables both parties to cross-license these and other patented technologies. Other terms and conditions of the settlement are confidential by agreement of the court.
