Cyber Threats
Cyber risk is an existential threat: it’s time to manage it properly
Cybersecurity experts have often warned about the financial and reputational repercussions of serious breaches. Some researchers have even tried to estimate the average cost of such incidents. But there’s nothing more sobering than hearing it straight from those businesses directly impacted.
New research reveals that a fifth have come close to bankruptcy because of a major attack on their systems. It’s clearly time we all paid more attention to mitigating cyber risk.
One platform to manage risk
The same report, compiled by global insurer Hiscox, claims that the number of breach victims rose 12% from 2020 to 2021. At the same time, costs surged by 29%. Most responding organisations believe they’ve become more vulnerable due to employees working from home. Cloud and on-premises servers, email and remote access infrastructure were among the top attack vectors highlighted.
Respondents are right to think they’ve become more exposed over the course of the pandemic. Investments in cloud infrastructure, sometimes misconfigured and unpatched, and home working endpoints, have expanded the digital attack surface considerably. The first step to mitigating these risks is understanding the extent of that attack surface.
At Trend Micro, we argue that the best way to understand risk exposure then take steps to address via protection, detection and response it is via a single platform. That will offer the best chance of maximum visibility whilst minimizing coverage gaps. It also saves the cost of maintaining multiple point products, and the time and effort demanded of stretched IT security teams to administer them.
