The value of listening: Making every employee feel heard
Amid the cut and thrust of daily working life, it’s easy for employers to forget that their staff are individuals, with their own thoughts, ideas and aspirations. Too often we’re treated as just another cog in the corporate machine. That was certainly my experience of work, until arriving at Trend Micro.
Amid the cut and thrust of daily working life, it’s easy for employers to forget that their staff are individuals, with their own thoughts, ideas and aspirations. Too often we’re treated as just another cog in the corporate machine. That was certainly my experience of work, until arriving at Trend Micro.
This is a company that truly listens to its employees – that encourages open discussion and inspires us to reach and exceed our potential, a place where everyone is approachable no matter their job role.
Valued to the core
Even with the advent of hybrid working, most of us spend more hours each week submerged in work than we do with friends and family. Yet it’s often one-way traffic. Companies talk a good game about their corporate culture, but in my experience it’s usually just talk. I’ve never felt like my contributions mattered or my concerns were heard at work, until coming to Trend. This is a company that values the work each and every one of us does.
What does it mean to be valued? It means not merely hearing but listening to your employees – taking their opinions on board and encouraging the sharing of thoughts and ideas. It means giving them the confidence to try new things – to dare to fail.
Delivering for our customers
This isn’t just for the benefit of the people who work at Trend. It ultimately has a positive impact on our customers and partners. Why? Because an employee that feels valued will be a happier employee – motivated to do their best for their customers. It also nurtures a family environment, a phrase thrown out regularly but rarely embodied, where colleagues are quick to step in and help, mentor and work up new solutions.
I love my job. There’s a genuine sense of shared purpose to everything we do. We work hard together to create new products that lead to more innovation, even when we fail – because failure is an opportunity for growth. It’s just one of the reasons why Trend Micro continues to stay at the top of its game after more than three decades and why I could not be happier to be here.
