Protecting the company against industrial espionage and adapting operations to the General Data Protection Law (GDPL)

With 79 years of history and around 1.5 billion in annual revenue, the metallurgy company applies modern technology in stamping, machining, welding, and painting processes to manufacture lighter, more durable, and more efficient metal parts and assemblies.

Located in the city of Panambi, Bruning has a client portfolio that includes prominent names on the national and multinational scene such as General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Volvo, AGCO, Caterpillar, Iveco, John Deere, CNH Industrial, among others.

CHALLENGES

In 2019, due to the considerable increase in cyberattacks and greater targeting by hackers, Bruning decided to deepen the six-year partnership via IntegraSul with Trend Micro, a leader in information security.

“Bruning was the second Trend customer in Latin America to implement the Deep Discovery solution,” recalls Marcelo Pacheco, CEO of IntegraSul.

In addition to complying with the General Data Protection Law (GDPL), Bruning’s concern was to protect customers’ strategic information, guaranteeing the confidentiality of commissioned projects. After all, there are many cases of industrial espionage, and ransomware attacks have also been growing at an alarming rate.

“Information security levels have never been more critical. That’s why we opted for an XDR solution—to have better assertiveness in terms of information and know exactly where the problem is, and for greater speed in reacting and resolving incidents, should they occur,” highlights André Prado, senior IT analyst at Bruning Tecnometal.

WHY TREND

To keep Bruning one step ahead of attackers, IntegraSul monitors the market and follows new trends and technologies in the security area, evaluating the points of greatest attention and the key vulnerabilities.

Since Trend has always been a strategic partner of Bruning, it was only natural for the consultancy firm to frequently present new tools and platforms created to improve Bruning’s security posture.

“When it comes to cybersecurity, organizations must constantly assess their risk management maturity level and plan the improvements necessary to protect their business models. Relying on the expertise of a specialized consultancy firm, which frequently presents emerging strategies to strengthen the digital environment, is one of the ways to maintain resilience,” explained Rodrigo Garcia, head of sales at Trend Micro Brazil.

SOLUTION

The Trend Vision One platform was chosen by Bruning to ensure the protection of the attack surface and the management of the company’s SOC when the IT sector decided to migrate its servers to the cloud and create controls with multiple layers of security.

Bruning also acquired the Smart Protection Suites package, which includes Cloud App Security (CAS), Email and App Security, Trend Micro Apex One, XDR for Endpoints and Workload Security for servers, in addition to DLP, both for the security of engineering files and the exchange of information in general.

RESULTS

The intuitive dashboards, user-friendly interface, and useful functionalities are the biggest differentiators of Trend Vision One, in the opinion of Bruning’s senior IT analyst.

“It would not do any good to have a beautiful, well-made graphic that in practice did not work. The main point of Trend is that it offers a tool that delivers protection that adds value to the company, so much so that since 2018 we have not had any ransomware incidents,” revealed Prado.

Another advantage of Trend Vision One, highlighted by Prado, is the flexibility that the platform offers by adding several optional features that can be enabled (i.e. contracted) or not, at the customer’s sole discretion, in addition to integration with other solutions.

“Trend Vision One came to solve our problem of having one different tool for each task running at the same time. The integration it provides has made our lives a lot easier,” he said.

According to Prado, the platform also acts proactively in relation to control.

“When I have an incident in part of my network, for example, I can isolate the structure of those computers potentially affected by an infection or vulnerability, without having to go like crazy looking for a switch,” explained Prado.

The CEO of IntegraSul also highlighted the learning opportunity that Trend Vision One offers, should an incident occur.

“Without the solution we have no possibility of analyzing and understanding how the incident started and why it occurred,” added Pacheco.

The harmony of the partnership with IntegraSul is also strongly appreciated by Prado.

“There’s no point in having a strong product or robust solution available on the market if you don’t have partners capable of carrying out this work. I would like to thank IntegraSul for its dedication and commitment, and to Pacheco for driving the good results that we have accumulated in recent years, especially with regard to business intelligence, bringing the best tools on the market and taking on the challenge of maintaining the company operational, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” highlighted Prado.

Created in April 2023, the Trend Vision One application is a differentiator highlighted by Bruning. The resource allows real-time monitoring of the organization’s Risk Index, workbench, and main security notifications. The Risk Index measures and weighs the risk of vulnerabilities, security controls and misconfiguration, asset criticality, detections, account compromise, anomalies, and cloud activity data, and categorizes risk factors to provide visibility into users, devices and the use of virtual applications that pose some risk or danger to the infrastructure.

“The [Trend Vision One] app has brought great mobility because we have the information at our fingertips. With it, we can quickly assess all risks. Imagine how hard it would be to find out in a few minutes—or seconds—how many devices were affected by a threat and whether it is very serious or not, in a network as big as ours, with almost two thousand devices. Therefore, having this information by just looking at a cell phone screen—and knowing whether you have to wake everyone up or if you can go to sleep in peace—is a huge advantage,” concluded Prado.
