Shields its email infrastructure and collaboration tools with Trend Micro solutions
OVERVIEW
Calvià City Council, located on the island of Mallorca, is a government entity responsible for offering essential services to a population of more than 52,000 inhabitants and a large number of tourists who visit the region each year. With digitalization and the increasing sophistication of cyber threats—particularly those via email—protecting the council’s email infrastructure became a critical priority. They needed to ensure both the integrity and confidentiality of internal and external communications utilizing this infrastructure, such as Google Workspace™ storage space and collaborative applications.

CHALLENGES
The council embarked on a cybersecurity project to implement advanced protection solutions for email, thus shielding a critical component of their IT infrastructure. To do this, they turned to the European Commission’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan to subsidize part of the project.
In 2021, the council received EUR €192,366.58 in subsidies aimed at the digital transformation and modernization of the administrations of local entities. These efforts align with the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan’s conditions 11 (modernization of public administrations) and 15 (digital connectivity, the promotion of cybersecurity, and deployment of 5G), representing EUR €44,120 of the total amount subsidized.
Email security is “an area that did not have any protection and that was essential to secure, since it continues to be the most popular means of communication and one of the main attack vectors,” explains Xisco Mir, Head of New Technologies at Calvià City Council.
WHY TREND
After analyzing several options presented to them, a proposal from Trend in tandem with SATEC, Advanced Technology Systems, SA was chosen by Calvià City Council.
“We chose this one because the quality-price-performance ratio suited our needs very well,” says Mir.
“We needed to delegate email security to a specific specialized tool because it was becoming increasingly difficult to identify the sophisticated phishing and spam emails we received,” Mir adds. “This made us very exposed to a possible cyberattack.”
According to Mir, the proposal submitted by Trend was very complete in terms of functionality, focusing on the protection of email and collaboration applications against an ever-expanding, constantly evolving attack surface. Utilizing the Trend Vision One™ platform affords the opportunity to safeguard the message transfer agent (MTA) for inbound and outbound email along with Google Workspace’s integrated application programming interface (API).
Calvià City Council now has more than 1,000 licenses deployed with Trend solutions that provide centralized visibility and management with unified protection, detection, and response.

RESULTS
The council has strengthened the security of email and other forms of collaboration, achieved without neither sacrificing operational efficiency nor hindering internal or external communications. These results are made possible by the expertise and innovations of Trend and SATEC. In addition, the council has seen the daily volume of spam and phishing emails it receives reduced, improving visibility and risk management in its email and collaboration service by way of advanced threat detection capabilities.
