THE CHALLENGE
Protecting critical open data in a public cloud environment
The Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) weather room is on standby 24/7 to warn citizens in the Netherlands of dangerous or extreme weather. They provide advice to the government, port companies, and Schiphol Airport, holding vast amounts of historical climate data dating back to the 17th century. When they moved to a public cloud environment, the KNMI knew they needed proactive security to protect data assets, particularly for critical users such as meteorologists who inform air traffic control.
The KNMI needed cloud security they could control themselves, with a smooth rollout that would keep operations running seamlessly.
The KNMI team had a few key requirements. First, they needed control over their own security environment, part of a longstanding practice to maintain internal knowledge and expertise, streamline internal communication, and make optimal use of new technological solutions.
“By keeping control in its own hands and implementing TrendAI Vision One™ solutions as independently as possible, DevOps teams can be better and more actively supported,” says Ekko Huizenga, Product Owner at the KNMI.
The institute also wanted a smooth implementation. “It is important that we can exercise good control over our data,” says Enterprise Architect at the KNMI, René Joosten. “TrendAI Vision One fits perfectly with this. In addition, it can be set up tightly and relatively easily rolled out.”

Security, support and an optimized cloud environment
To help the KNMI keep as much control as possible over the implementation of new technology, TrendAI™ offered personalized support. KNMI developers communicated regularly with TrendAI™ and actively collaborated on application security and optimizing the use of software solutions.
“TrendAI is always ready to help the customer and come by to assist with problems. The communication is good and runs smoothly,” says Huizenga. “We get the impression of a flat organization and we never feel like we’re at the back of the line.”
The KNMI’s next major project with TrendAI™ involves securing the European Weather Cloud, a collaborative effort with other European weather services. This initiative aims to provide infrastructure-as-a-service, allowing each partner to customize their own setup.
Building on the positive experience with TrendAI Vision One™ Cloud Security, the KNMI plans to expand its use of the industry-leading AI security platform by implementing the full solution suite in the future. This move represents a further investment in the platform and aims to automate more security operations.
