This Trojan drops the following component file(s):

  • %System Root%\Windows\System32\Tasks\GoogleUpdateTasksMachineUI ← scheduled task that executes malware every 3 minutes

(Note: %System Root% is the Windows root folder, where it usually is C:\ on all Windows operating system versions.)

It uses the Windows Task Scheduler to add a scheduled task that executes the copies it drops.

It creates the following folders:

  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\dn
  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\tp
  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\up
  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV

Backdoor Routine

This Trojan connects to the following URL(s) to send and receive commands from a remote malicious user:

  • http://{random}.{BLOCKED}pdate.tk ← C&C communication
  • http://{BLOCKED}pdate.tk/index.aspx?id={random}d ← for download
  • http://{BLOCKED}pdate.tk/index.aspx?id={random}u ← for upload

Dropping Routine

This Trojan drops the following files:

  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\backup1.vbs ← executes DnE1.Ps1 and DnS1.Ps1
  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\DnE1.Ps1 ← download and upload execution (TROJ_HELMINTH.PS)
  • %System Root%\Users\Public\Libraries\RecordedTV\DnS1.Ps1 ← C&C communicator (TROJ_HELMINTH.PS)

Other Details

This Trojan does the following:

  • It sends a request to the remote URL to download a file which it executes on the machine. It then sends the results of the executed file back to the remote server.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by TROJ_HELMINTH.PS. (Note: Please skip this step if the threat(s) listed below have already been removed.)
