Solutions

  • Reduction in time required for security operations, including EDR alert reviews
  • Cut alert confirmation and response, which previously required up to two hours
  • Streamlines operations, increasing risk visibility, and reducing operational load

CHALLENGES

Yaoko operates over 200 stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area, achieving consistent sales and profit growth for 35 consecutive periods. Recognizing that IT measures are directly related to business, the supermarket giant actively promotes digital transformation for business growth. Since 2022, the company has accelerated efforts to overhaul its security from the ground up, emphasizing internal control, compliance, and security.

A cyber attack during the development of security guidelines highlighted the urgent need for robust security measures, including endpoint detection and response (EDR). Although another EDR product was initially introduced, operational challenges arose due to limited resources. Daily alert management and response became difficult without sufficient knowledgeable personnel. Additionally, using different vendors for endpoint protection platforms (EPP) and EDR increased operational load and complexity across multiple environments.

SOLUTION

Consolidation to simplify management and operations

Yaoko decided to introduce Trend Vision One Endpoint Security, a comprehensive solution that delivers defense functions like antimalware, vulnerability protection, and EDR. By deploying a security agent to client PCs and servers, Yaoko aggregates data into the AI-powered enterprise cybersecurity platform Trend Vision One. Their IT team can now leverage advanced analysis to support rapid threat detection and response.

Trend Vision One helps Yaoko seamlessly protect both onpremises and cloud environments by unifying the management console and vendors to centralize management and reduce operational workload. Trend Service One managed EDR service provides Yaoko with 24/7 EDR monitoring, investigation, and response support, significantly reducing operational burdens.

As Trend Vision One is highly scalable, it allows Yaoko to support additional security products for network, email, and mobile devices. This includes external attack surface management (EASM), cloud security posture management (CSPM), and identity threat detection and response (ITDR).

RESULTS

Unified visibility to efficiently understand and manage risks

In 2023, Yaoko recognized a growing need for attack surface management after Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ ASM introduction guidance was released. The ability to integrate security operations beyond the endpoint domain into Trend Vision One was incredibly appealing.

Before adopting Trend Vision One, using EDR from other companies was time-consuming. Each alert took 30 minutes to two hours to confirm and respond to, and handling multiple alerts often required a whole day. By consolidating endpoint security into Trend Vision One and shifting primary alert confirmation to Trend Service One managed services, Yaoko significantly reduced response times. Only the alerts needing attention were escalated to Yaoko, streamlining their operations. This approach also enabled efficient and centralized cyber risk management in a multi-cloud environment with cloud security posture management (CSPM) feature provided by Trend Vision One Cloud Risk Management.

NEXT STEPS

Preparing for the complexities of AI

Yaoko plans to evaluate the network connecting headquarters, stores, and the cloud, along with the security of mobile devices used at these locations, with the goal of consolidating them into Trend Vision One.

“As cyberattacks become more sophisticated in the future, we believe that it is necessary to strengthen security, including the organizational structure, and I would like to ask Trend Micro to continue to support us as a highly sensitive companion partner for new technologies such as AI,” concludes Head Office Digital Management Department IT Infrastructure Division, General Manager, Akishi Ogasawara.

Strengthening security is important, but it is also important not to hinder the speed of DX and CX.
