  OVERVIEW

Infection Channel:

Downloaded from the Internet, Dropped by other malware, Propagates via email

This worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It modifies certain registry entries to disable Security Center functions. Doing this allows this malware to execute its routines without being detected. It bypasses the Windows firewall. This allows the malware to perform its intended routine without being detected by an installed firewall. It creates certain registry entries to disable applications related to security.

It gathers target email addresses from cached email, address books, and mailboxes.

It modifies the Internet Explorer Zone Settings. It lowers the security setting of Internet Explorer.

Arrival Details

This worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %User Temp%\{random filename}.exe
  • %System%\{random filename}.exe

(Note: %User Temp% is the user's temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.. %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It drops and executes the following files:

  • %User Temp%\{random}.reg ← used to add registry entires; deleted afterwards

(Note: %User Temp% is the user's temporary folder, where it usually is C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (32- and 64-bit); C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit), Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8 (32- and 64-bit), Windows 8.1 (32- and 64-bit), Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.)

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
{random filename} = {random filename}"User Temp%\{random filename}.exe -w"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
