Arrival Details

This backdoor arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This backdoor drops the following copies of itself into the affected system and executes them:

  • %User Profile%\Application Data\KB{random number}.exe

(Note: %User Profile% is the current user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Windows\Profiles\{user name} on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\Profiles\{user name} on Windows NT, and C:\Documents and Settings\{user name} on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It drops the following files:

  • %User Temp%\exp{number}.tmp.bat - used to delete the initially executed copy. This file is deleted after execution

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.)

It creates the following folders:

  • %User Profile%\Application Data\{random folder name}

It adds the following mutexes to ensure that only one of its copies runs at any one time:

  • Local\XME{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMI{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMM{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMS{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMF{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMR{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMQ{8 random characters}
  • Local\XMB{8 random characters}

It injects codes into the following process(es):

  • explorer.exe

Autostart Technique

This backdoor adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
KB{random number}.exe = "%User Profile%\Application Data\KB{random number}.exe"

Other System Modifications

This backdoor adds the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\{random value 1}

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\{random value 2}

It adds the following registry entries:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
GlobalUserOffline = "0"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows NT\{random value 2}
Default = "{script containing bank-related strings}"

Propagation

This backdoor does not have any propagation routine.

NOTES:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\{random value 2} can be identified if the malware is able to download the script which contains the bank-related strings.

The created registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\{random value 1} cannot be identified by the users since there is no reference value in the created key. The only way this key can be identified is by comparing the present key with a backup if the users have one. Note that this key need not be deleted since it won't cause the user system any harm.
