THE CHALLENGE
Insufficient vulnerability detection and difficulty managing individually installed applications
For BS11, a popular channel managed by Nippon BS Broadcasting Corporation in Tokyo, Japan, delivering important information and programming effectively means operating efficiently and securely. Improving operational continuity and avoiding broadcast accidents are essential in reducing risk. Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and there are many cases with other organizations where threats such as ransomware have targeted broadcasting systems. At BS11, employees sometimes installed applications individually for business purposes. However, this made application management and protection difficult.
Masaki Igarashi, Deputy General Manager at Nippon BS Broadcasting Corporation, is responsible for BS11’s cybersecurity measures. He had studied attack surface management technology for a long time. With his comprehensive insights, Igarashi-san knew the company needed to try to find weaknesses in the organization from the attacker’s point of view.
We make decisions on how to deal with the risk items presented by CREM, taking into account the use of target assets.
THE SOLUTION
Visualizing, prioritizing, and mitigating risk with the power of Trend Vision One™
To help secure their endpoints, BS11 uses Trend Vision One™ Endpoint Security. In using the solution every day, Igarashi-san learned that he could access a free trial of Trend Vision One™ Cyber Risk Exposure Management (CREM).
“During the trial, I felt that CREM was very useful in that it could assess risks from the attacker’s point of view, such as where it is easy to target, which is not found in conventional security products,” says Igarashi-san.
“Then, in recognition of the fact that it can achieve a higher level of response than before with less load, we decided to hire it after the trial period ended,” he adds. “We’ve begun internal coordination to have CREM in our production environment.”
CREM enables organizations to visualize, prioritize, and mitigate risk, empowering them to proactively secure their attack surface against internal and external cyber threats. This includes monitoring and protecting assets such as operating systems, devices, and per-user accounts and security settings.
Igarashi-san appreciates that Trend Vision One provides more detailed visibility into vulnerabilities and risks than ever before, all while making it easier to prioritize responses through dedicated risk scoring. The ability to visualize application versions and detect vulnerabilities made it an ideal fit. In addition to its powerful cyber risk exposure management capabilities, Trend Vision One has helped BS11 improve and centralize their application management.
In particular, Igarashi-san appreciates how Trend Vision One identifies vulnerabilities in applications deployed by employees that weren’t fully understood by traditional management methods. He also appreciates how easy it is to prioritize response based on risk scoring. For the team, it’s been highly beneficial to use cyber risk exposure management capabilities through their existing management console via Trend Vision One.
Clarity into risk urgency and rapid response action
Another advantage of cyber risk exposure management through Trend Vision One is that it can determine not only risks themselves, but how best to respond while taking into account everyday operations. Risks are displayed even if they aren’t yet addressed. Through proactive visualization, prioritization, and risk scoring, security teams have essential clarity and awareness of what needs the most urgent attention.
“We make decisions on how to deal with the risk items presented by CREM, taking into account the use of target assets.” says Igarashi-san.
For BS11, ensuring the safety of broadcast operations and continuing to deliver content to viewers is a fundamental part of its corporate value. The implementation of CREM is an important step towards this goal.
Igarashi-san leverages Trend Vision One every day to keep an eye on security operations at BS11 by accessing consolidated risk insights. Through the Attack Surface Discovery page in the management console, he can view the risk associated with each IT device, which common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) could be exploited by attackers, and the calculated overall risk score. BS11 compares the score with the industry average, striving to keep theirs as low as possible.
We view cyber risk as business risk and work to avoid incidents that would disrupt production."

RESULTS
Moving faster than the speed of threats
By proactively managing their cyber exposure risk through Trend Vision One, BS11 has gained visibility into applications that were not fully understood by traditional management methods. This has helped them prioritize and address vulnerabilities, outpacing threat actors.
Proactively addressing cyber risk as a business risk
Although BS11 has never had a major security incident before, they plan to continue incorporating the latest security technologies, including XDR, cyber risk exposure management, and endpoint security through Trend Vision One. This centralized approach to early detection and response enables the team to maintain control over their cyber risk, remain proactively secure, and stay on the air.
Igarashi-san and the team want to create an environment conducive to, in the event of an intrusion, early detection and damage control. Viewing cyber risk as a business risk, he strives to avoid broadcasting accidents or stoppages, helping BS11 thrive.
