Trend Micro CTF Asia Pacific & Japan Announces Ten Finalists

Top Prize: ¥1,000,000 JPY

[September 30, 2015] Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in security software and solutions, has announced the finalists of the Trend Micro CTF Asia Pacific & Japan contest. 881 teams of security experts from over 29 Asia Pacific & Japan countries/regions took up the challenge. After a 24 hour online qualifying round, the 10 best teams from Australia (1 team), China (2 teams), Japan (3 teams), Taiwan (3 teams), and one multinational team qualified for the final round in Tokyo to be held on November 21st and 22nd. The winning team will receive ¥1,000,000 JPY.

"As ubiquity becomes the norm for cloud and IoT, hacking incidents and their damages have increased in diversity, scope, and velocity," said Trend Micro Chief Development Officer Oscar Chang. "Security threats, such as APT attacks, zero-day exploits, and ransomware, have swept through the world, and Asia Pacific is no exception. Information security deployments have become more critical than ever to governments, businesses, and individuals alike. In response to this changing security environment, Trend Micro has launched the inaugural Attack and Defense style international security competition, so top security professionals can exchange their experiences and best practices in Asia Pacific, for enhanced online security".

The Trend Micro CTF Asia Pacific & Japan challenge covers targeted attacks, binary analysis, packet analysis, IoT, and ICS/SCADA. After a Jeopardy-style online qualifying contest over a 24-hour period, the ten best teams from Australia, China, Japan, Taiwan and other nations qualified for the final round.

The 24-hour Attack and Defense final round will be a tremendous challenge of technical skills, teamwork, and physical strength for each of the teams, each of which will consist of up to four people. Besides offering ¥1,000,000 JPY, the runner-up and third place winners will also receive ¥300,000 JPY and ¥200,000 JPY respectively. The “best of the best“ will be revealed in November.
