Arrival Details

This Worm arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This Worm drops the following files:

  • %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity\MicrosoftUpdate.lnk

(Note: %System Root% is the Windows root folder, where it usually is C:\ on all Windows operating system versions.)

It drops and executes the following files:

  • %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity\MicrosoftSecurity.exe

(Note: %System Root% is the Windows root folder, where it usually is C:\ on all Windows operating system versions.)

It adds the following processes:

  • %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity\MicrosoftSecurity.exe /AutoIt3ExecuteScript %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity\Microsoft.a3x
  • %System%\cmd.exe /c start %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity/MicrosoftSecurity.exe %System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity/Microsoft.a3x

(Note: %System Root% is the Windows root folder, where it usually is C:\ on all Windows operating system versions.. %System% is the Windows system folder, where it usually is C:\Windows\System32 on all Windows operating system versions.)

It creates the following folders:

Other Details

This Worm does the following:

  • It executes the following commands to bypass Windows Firewall:
    • %System%\netsh.exe firewall add allowedprogram "%System Root%\MicrosoftSecurity\MicrosoftSecurity.exe" "MicrosoftSecurity.exe" ENABLE
  • It drops the .lnk files in every infected directory with the following filename:
    • {Infected Directory}\{Parent Folder Name}.lnk
    • {Infected Directory}\My Music.lnk
    • {Infected Directory}\My Pictures.lnk
    • {Infected Directory}\My Reports.lnk
    • {Infected Directory}\Statments.lnk

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as Worm.AutoIt.OTORUN.AC.
