This worm drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system. It uses icons similar to those of legitimate applications to entice a user to click them.

It also has rootkit capabilities, which enables it to hide its processes and files from the user.

It executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.

Installation

This worm drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:

  • %System%\jushed.exe

(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)

It drops the following files:

  • %System%\javaup.exe - detected as TROJ_INJECT.JKSA
  • %System%\javaup2.exe - detected as TROJ_HILOTI.SMEO

Autostart Technique

This worm adds the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution at every system startup:

Sun Java Update Scheudler = %System%\jushed.exe

This worm adds the following registry keys:

It also creates the following registry entry(ies) as part of its installation routine:

Propagation

This worm creates the following folders in all removable drives:

  • [DRIVE]:\RECYCLER\{SID}

It drops the following copy(ies) of itself in all removable drives:

  • [DRIVE]:\RECYCLER\{SID}\redmond.exe

It drops an AUTORUN.INF file to automatically execute the copies it drops when a user accesses the drives of an affected system.

The said .INF file contains the following strings:

For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as WORM_PROLACO.QZZ. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Search and delete these folders
