Spammers Send Holiday Greetings

 Analysis by: Ediste dela Cruz

Spammers leverage the upcoming holiday seasons to potentially steal user information. Trend Micro researchers found spammed messages containing greetings for the holidays. At first glance, these messages seem to contain warm wishes for the holiday season. Upon closer inspection, the message contains errors and an out-of-place greeting about Easter.

Some users might be tempted to respond but the sender is forged and the email is a hoax. Once users reply to the message, their email addresses can be added to a list of active email addresses collected by spammers. These spammers will then be able to send more spam to these users. These spammers might also share or sell their list of active email addresses to other spammers. Users are advised to be wary in opening email messages from unknown sources.
