Arrival Details
This Trojan arrives by connecting affected removable drives to a system.
It arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.
Installation
This Trojan drops the following copies of itself into the affected system:
(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)
It drops the following component file(s):
- {DRIVE}:\autorun.inf - detected as VBS_AUTORUN.FEG
It stays memory-resident by injecting codes into the following processes:
Autostart Technique
This Trojan modifies the following registry entries to ensure it automatic execution at every system startup:

Propagation
This Trojan drops copies of itself in all removable drives.
NOTES:
The deleted files are the usual malware names used by other malware when dropping in the system. This malware deletes other malware in the affected system.
Step 1
For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.
Step 2
Remove the malware/grayware file that dropped/downloaded VBS_FAKEAV.SMW

Terminate a malware/grayware process

To terminate the malware/grayware process:
- Open Windows Task Manager. To do this, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC then click the Processes tab.
- In the list of running programs, locate the process:
- Select the process then press the End Process button.
- To check if the malware/grayware process/es has/have been terminated, close Windows Task Manager then open it again.
- Close Windows Task Manager.

Step 6
Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as VBS_FAKEAV.SMW. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files.
