DOS file infecting viruses generally copy their codes onto executable programs such as .COM and .EXE files. Most DOS file infectors simply replicate and spread, although there are others that inadvertently damage or overwrite their host programs. They also carry payloads that range from the benign, like displaying messages, to the the highly destructive, such as formatting hard drives.
