Infection Channel 1 : Propagates via network shares

Infection Channel 2 : Propagates via software vulnerabilities

Description:

This memory-resident worm spreads via network shares. It generates IP addresses and attempts to drop a copy of itself in certain default shares. If the said shares are password-protected, it uses a long list of generic user names and passwords in order to gain access.

It also exploits the following Windows and Dameware vulnerabilities to propagate:

  • WebDav Buffer Overflow vulnerability
  • Buffer Overrun in RPC May Allow Code Execution vulnerability
  • Buffer Overrun In RPCSS Service Could Allow Code Execution vulnerability
  • ASN.1 Library Bitstring Heap Overflow vulnerability
  • LSASS Remote Buffer Overflow vulnerability
  • DameWare Remote Control Server Stack Overflow vulnerability

For more information about the said vulnerabilities, please refer to the following Web pages:

In addition, this worm takes advantage of the Veritas Backup Exec Name Service Remote Buffer Overflow vulnerability. Further information about the said vulnerability may be found at its corresponding Web site.

It also attempts to exploit systems affected by the MYDOOM and BAGLE malware via opened ports 3127 and 2745, respectively to drop and execute other malware files.

Moreover, it acts as a server program controlled by an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) bot. It opens random ports and connects to an IRC server. It then joins an IRC channel. Once connected, this server program receives commands from the IRC bot. The said commands are used to control the target system and the behavior of the server program.

It also terminates processes, which are related to antivirus applications and malware, such as WORM_BAGLE and WORM_MYDOOM variants.

This worm steals Microsoft Windows Product ID and CD keys from certain games. It also uses the Carnivore network sniffer to retrieve passwords and other sensitive information.

Details:

Installation and Autostart Techniques

This worm may arrive as a file dropped by other malware or downloaded and installed by an unsuspecting user while browsing the Internet. Upon execution, it drops a copy of itself in the Windows system folder as XSYN.PIF.

It creates the following registry entries to enable its automatic execution on every system startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
M1cr0s0ftf DDEs C0ntr01 = "Xsyn.pif"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
M1cr0s0ftf DDEs C0ntr01 = "Xsyn.pif"

It also adds the following registry entry as part of its installation routine:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OLE
M1cr0s0ftf DDEs C0ntr01 = "Xsyn.pif"

Other Registry Modifications

This worm disables the DCOM protocol and restricts anonymous access to the affected system by modifying the following registry entries:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
EnableDCOM = "N"

(Note: The default value for this entry is "Y".)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\LSA
Restrictanonymous = "dword:00000001"

(Note: Although there is no default value for RestrictAnonymous, it may be modified by the user.)

Network Propagation and Exploits

This worm spreads via network shares. It generates IP addresses and attempts to drop a copy of itself in the following default shares of the target address:

  • ADMIN$\system32
  • C$\Windows\system32
  • C$\WINNT\system32
  • IPC$

If the said shares are password-protected, it uses any of the following user names and passwords in order to gain access:

Backdoor Capabilities

This worm acts as a server program controlled by an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) bot. It opens random ports and connects to an IRC server. It then joins an IRC channel. Once connected, this server program receives commands from the IRC bot. The following commands are used to control the target system and the behavior of the server program:

  • Change the nickname of the bot
  • Display bot status
  • Display information or messages from a remote user
  • Display system information
  • Display the identification of current code
  • Download and execute files from an FTP or HTTP site
  • Enable and delete shares
  • Enable and disable DCOM
  • Flush DNS cache
  • Generate a new random nick for the bot
  • Launches the following denial of service (DoS) attacks:
    • DDOS flood
    • ICMP flood
    • Ping flood
    • SYN flood
    • TCP flood
    • UDP flood
  • Log keystrokes
  • Open a file
  • Perform packet sniffing for specific strings
  • Prints network information when host matches
  • Resolve IP or host name by DNS
  • Run an MS-DOS command
  • Terminate itself
