Description:

This worm spreads through network shares. It may use cached passwords to access target systems and spread through these network shares.

It has backdoor capabilities. It connects to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server and then joins an IRC channel to act as a server program controlled by an IRC bot. Once connected, this server program receives commands from the IRC bot.

This worm also takes advantage of the Windows LSASS vulnerability. For more information about this Windows vulnerability, please refer to the following Microsoft Web page:

This worm modifies the HOSTS file, preventing the user from accessing certain Web sites, mostly antivirus and security-related sites.

It also terminates certain processes associated with antivirus and security applications, including those related to other malware programs. It also steals CD keys, serial numbers, and application product IDs of certain game applications.

This worm also launches denial of service (DoS) attacks.

This worm runs on Windows NT, 2000, and XP.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Size of malware: 159,744 Bytes

Initial samples received on: Nov 22, 2004

Payload 1: Compromises system security

Trigger condition 1: Upon execution

Details:

Installation and Autostart Technique

Upon execution, this worm drops a copy of itself named DMSVC32.EXE in the Windows system folder. It then attempts to delete itself after execution.

It may then create the following registry entries so that it executes every time Windows starts:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
CurrentVersion\Run
Dmsvc32 = Dmsvc32.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
CurrentVersion\RunServices
Dmsvc32 = Dmsvc32.exe

Network Propagation and Exploits

This worm also takes advantage of the following Windows vulnerability:

    Windows LSASS vulnerability

For more information about this Windows vulnerability, please refer to the following Microsoft Web page:

It also searches for the following network shares:

  • ADMIN$\system32
  • C$\Windows\system32
  • C$\WINNT\system32
  • Print$\

If these folders have full access rights, It may use cached passwords to access target systems and spread via the said network shares.

Denial of Service

This worm performs denial of service (DoS) attack by performing the following flood attacks on random IP addresses:

  • HTTP
  • LEET
  • SYN
  • TARGA3
  • UDP

Backdoor Capabilities

This worm also has backdoor functionalities. It has a built-in Internet Chat Relay (IRC) client engine, which enables it to connect to an IRC channel and listen for commands from a remote user. These commands include:

  • Change, reconnect, and send message to server
  • Join a channel
  • Send a file over DCC
  • Run command shell
  • Enable/disable DCOM
  • Delete shares
  • Flush bot DNS cache
  • Generate random nickname
  • Display system info
  • Open a file
  • Check for sniffer
  • Kill antivirus processes
  • Check for vulnerabilities, and other malware
  • Sniff for HTTP, IRC and FTP packets
