This Trojan arrives as attachment to email messages spammed by another malware or a malicious user. It may be downloaded from remote sites by other malware.

It then executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.

This malicious PDF file exploits the following vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat 9.2 and earlier versions:

Upon opening this specially crafted PDF file, it drops the file %Temp%\AdobeUpdate.exe. The dropped file is detected by Trend Micro as BKDR_HORST.JW.

Solution:

For Windows ME and XP users, before doing any scans, please make sure you disable System Restore to allow full scanning of your computer.

 Step 1: Remove malware files related to TROJ_PIDIEF.PGU  

 Step 2: Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TROJ_PIDIEF.PGU  

*Note: If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. Please check this Knowledge Base page for more information.

 Step 3: Security Patch Unavailable  

*Note: As of this writing, there is no patch that addresses this issue. Users are advised to disable Javascript when viewing PDF files. To do this, please perform the following:

  1. Open Acrobat Reader
  2. Select Edit -> Preferences -> JavaScript and uncheck Enable Acrobat JavaScript
