Click fraud is a type of cybercriminal technique where malicious actors use an automated script or computer program to imitate a legitimate user's clicks. This is done to generate fraudulent charges on ads in pay-per-click advertising platforms.
Cybercriminals have been known to use malware and botnets to strengthen click fraud operations. They also hijack search results and use scams to generate more clicks from unknowing users. Click fraud Trojans may either be browser hijackers that change a user’s start page and searches to redirect to a third-party search engine or Trojans that silently pull down a list of advertising URLs and generate fake clicks on the ads in a hidden browser window.
