Hypo Alpe Adria Bank

Chooses Trend Micro to protect its virtual environments

Hypo Alpe Adria Bank S.p.A. is a credit institution belonging to HBI-Bundesholding AG, a holding company owned by the Austrian Ministry of Finance and headquartered in Vienna. It is based in Tavagnacco, Italy, and operates in various regions.

In 2012, Hypo Alpe Adria Bank realized that to improve customer service, it needed to boost application performance and improve access to information. The bank also wanted to improve front- and back-office operator response times, so it decided to revolutionize its IT systems, in the end making its entire IT infrastructure completely virtual.

“Our data center had become obsolete, so we opted for a complete update. The result has been a shift to virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and a private cloud that we manage internally,” said Marco Cozzi, CIO at Hype Alpe Adria Bank. Hypo Alpe Adria Bank implemented a completely virtualized environment on a VMware platform. They required a security system that would not undermine the performance of the individual machines and would keep everything closely supervised and monitored.

“We carefully studied the market and came to the conclusion that Trend Micro’s Deep Security solution was the right one for us. It allows us to save on hardware and expand our infrastructure without additional operational costs,” said Cozzi.

Another feature that convinced Hypo Alpe Adria Bank to adopt Trend Micro Deep Security was its level of centralization. There is no need to install a security system for each client. It’s integrated at the hypervisor level. “This made it possible to remove these tasks from the in-house service desk and have constantly protected machines,” said Cozzi.

Trend Micro Deep Security is a state-of-the-art integrated platform that protects dynamic data centers that include physical, virtual, and cloud servers as well as virtual desktops. Designed to defend the data center against data breaches and business disruptions, Trend Micro Deep Security is the first agentless security platform for VMWare and helps simplify security management, accelerate return on IT investments, and ease regulatory compliance. Virtual patching allows this adaptive and efficient security platform to protect company data and mission-critical applications without onerous emergency patching.

Trend Micro Deep Security guarantees a much more efficient use of resources and higher VM densities than traditional solutions, simplifying security operations and guaranteeing the ROI of virtualization and cloud projects. Tightly integrated modules can be used to easily extend the platform, customizing security with any combination of agentless and agent- based protection. This includes anti-malware, web reputation, bidirectional stateful firewall, intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS), log inspection, and integrity monitoring.

"We now have complete data available across our entire infrastructure, and we can be sure of always having the latest patch available, which protects us from all types of malware, on physical as well as virtual servers."

The solution is backed by the Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Network™. Trend Micro’s global threat intelligence quickly and accurately identifies new threats before they can attack. The Smart Protection Network constantly assesses and cross-checks information relating to threats, website reputation, and the origins of email messages and files, so Trend Micro Deep Security can provide protection against threats in real time.

Trend Micro Deep Security was implemented in Hypo Alpe Adria Bank’s IT infrastructure between September 2013 and June 2014. The system has been working at full capacity for a few months and already the benefits are clearly visible.

“We now have a complete data available across our entire infrastructure. Before this, we had different systems for clients and servers so we could not centralize our monitoring procedures. Now we know we will always have the latest patch available, which protects us from all types of malware, on physical as well as virtual servers,” said Cozzi.

Hypo Alpe Adria Bank has invested a great deal in virtualization and both performance and security have improved. “We are satisfied because Deep Security is an agentless security platform designed to solve the problems of the data center in both physical and virtual environments,” said Cozzi.

With Deep Security, Hypo Alpe Adria Bank has also been able to virtualize all desktops, including those of tellers, without exposing them to security risks or negatively impacting operations. To date, only a few credit institutions have completely virtualized all their workstations. In fact, tellers’ windows are the most difficult part of the virtualization project, because the virtual desktops must interact rapidly with the physical peripherals attached to the workstation (e.g., printers and scanners).

Security projects usually stop here, but Deep Security offers higher density on the hardware side and reliable management of all clients installed from a centralized console, which enabled Hypo Alpe Adria Bank to successfully complete its project.

What's Next

In the coming months, the credit institution intends to pursue more innovative infrastructure security projects. “Trend Micro was already our provider of choice for email security solutions, but now we are also thinking of developing and protecting the SMTP part of our operations, which until now has been managed by a different security provider. Given the results, we have decided to continue with Trend Micro,” said Cozzi.
