Imposter scams caused US consumers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/02\/nationwide-fraud-losses-top-10-billion-2023-ftc-steps-efforts-protect-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">lose nearly $2.7 billion in 2023<\/a> alone, and when bad actors impersonate the government, their deception can be especially convincing and concerning for potential victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In support of Slam the Scam Day, we\u2019ve compiled a list of five US government imposter scams that you should be aware of. The communication will often say that you\u2019re eligible for a tax refund, but you need to provide or update your address\/bank details. If you are using a desktop device and you see a suspicious link, hover your mouse over it to uncover where it truly leads. If you are unsure if a link is legitimate, you can verify it at the <a href=\"https:\/\/global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com\/\" aria-hidden=\"false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trend Micro Site Safety Center<\/a> for free.<\/h5>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IRS Unpaid Tax Scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers may also impersonate the IRS and email you claiming that your tax payment was unsuccessful and that you need to repay. Inside the email there is an attachment containing a receipt for the refunded failed payment. Also, did you notice any grammatical errors in the above scam? Always keep an eye out for poor spelling, punctuation, and grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Social Security Number Suspension Scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This scam is particularly scary because it claims that your Social Security number has been or will be suspended and often threatens you with legal action. However, it won\u2019t be a representative from the Social Security Administration (SSA) on the other end; it will be a scammer, whose goal is to trick you into sharing your valuable personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"row alert alert-info align-items-start align-items-md-center\">\n            <div class=\"col-2 col-md-1 ps-0 text-center\">\n                <i class=\"fas fa-circle-info fa-2x text-info\"><\/i>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"col-10 col-md-11\" style=\"border-left: 1px solid #9eeaf9\">\n                <h5 class=\"wp-block-heading pb-0 mb-0\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-equally-id=\"equally_ai___2zN46\" style=\"font-size: 16px !important;\">If you receive a suspicious email from the SSA or any other government agency, don\u2019t call any included numbers. Instead, visit the agency\u2019s website directly using your usual search engine (such as Google, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo) and use the contact information available there. For reference, the SSA\u2019s legitimate phone number is 1-800-772-1213.<\/h5>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fake FBI Email Scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scam, the sender impersonates an FBI agent, claiming that you\u2019ve been sent a package containing a large amount of money, but due to a lack of documentation the package has been confiscated, and you\u2019re at risk of being arrested for money laundering. Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"padding:10px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"829\" height=\"424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/scam-sample-fake-fbi-email.png\" alt=\"Fake FBI Email Scam\" class=\"wp-image-93701\" style=\"box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15) 0px 3px 3px 0px;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/scam-sample-fake-fbi-email.png 829w, https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/scam-sample-fake-fbi-email-480x246.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 829px, 100vw\" \/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This scam email instructs you to reply within 72 hours and avoid contacting a bank or anyone else. The scammer does not want you to contact anyone else as you may uncover that this is a scam email. The 72-hour deadline places an urgency on you to respond quickly \u2014 this is a common tactic used by scammers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look closely, you will see that the sender\u2019s email address (which has been partially blurred) doesn\u2019t resemble an official government\/FBI email address in any way \u2014 a huge red flag that it\u2019s completely bogus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IC3 Fake Compensation Scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This scam involves the scammer impersonating the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and falsely claiming that you\u2019re eligible to receive over $1.7 million in restitution for being a victim of an online fraud scheme. Here\u2019s what the scam email looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"padding:10px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/scam-sample-fake-ic3-fake-compensation-1024x339.png\" alt=\"IC3 Fake Compensation Scam\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15) 0px 3px 3px 0px;\"\/><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s simply not true; the scammer\u2019s goal is to entice you into contacting the included email address. Remember, scammers are tricksters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust your gut instinct, not caller ID.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hang up and\/or block the number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report it to the official organization the scammer was impersonating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not click on links or open attachments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be suspicious of requests for payment that you did not initiate or expect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not share your personal information such as passwords, one-time verification codes, or bank account details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not call phone numbers or correspond with email addresses provided to you from unsolicited communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the sender\u2019s email address or phone number. For example, if the email claims to be from a government agency yet the email address ends in @gmail.com, it is not to be trusted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locate the government agency\u2019s official contact information by visiting its website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Check If Your Personal Information Has Been Leaked Online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever received an email, text message or phone call that you suspect is a scam, it may be the case that your personal information has been leaked online.
