Video Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><a href=\"\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LynetteOwens_Trend_bw_edit2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-600\" title=\"LynetteOwens_Trend_bw_edit\" src=\"\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/LynetteOwens_Trend_bw_edit2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"124\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a>by Lynette Owens<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">For the last 3 years, we\u2019ve been asking young people across the US and Canada to tell us in 2 minutes or less their stories about safe, responsible technology use.\u00a0 They\u2019ve responded with enthusiasm and creativity; \u00a0they\u2019ve entertained and moved us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Our contest themes have varied each year: from online privacy to bullying to keeping online information safe.\u00a0 Each time, we\u2019ve seen a range of responses: how social networks are used, how cell phones are misused, or how bullying makes people feel and act, for better or worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This year, we\u2019re sticking to the format that\u2019s worked so well so far.\u00a0 We hope to again see more inventive storytelling on film.\u00a0 We\u2019d like contestants to continue using social media to spread their message.\u00a0 And we\u2019re ready to give out some very big cash prizes again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">But this year, we\u2019ve changed a few things \u2013 hopefully for the better.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>More Than Online Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Today marks the 10<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Safer Internet Day.\u00a0 2013 also brings Trend Micro&#8217; s 25th anniversary and 5<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of our Internet Safety for Kids and Families program. What better time to make a shift in the direction of our annual contest?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">But there are deeper reasons for the changes, beyond the convenience of the calendar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">In the world of online safety, it\u2019s hard to avoid conversations about risks, prevention, and the cost of being unaware.\u00a0\u00a0 We should absolutely be teaching kids how to use technology in ways that will keep the bad things\u00a0 and bad people away. \u00a0But we can\u2019t end the conversation there.\u00a0 Talking about safety alone is not enough.\u00a0 We don\u2019t raise our kids just to be safe people.\u00a0 We raise them hoping they\u2019ll one day be safe and responsible, happy, productive, successful\u00a0 people, too.\u00a0 Online or off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">In their work titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectsafely.org\/Commentaries-Staff\/online-safety-30-empowering-and-protecting-youth.html\">Online Safety 3.0: Empowering and Protecting Youth<\/a>, Anne Collier and Larry Magid of Connectsafely (judges for this year\u2019s contest) write \u201cLike the anonymous quote, \u2018peace is more than just the absence of war,\u2019 Internet Safety 3.0 is more than just the absence of danger\u2026 It includes finding ways to use technology for learning, collaboration, professional development, community building, civic engagement, and interacting with others.\u00a0 It\u2019s encouraging children and teenagers to thrive in and through their use of technology.\u201c\u00a0 We agree.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">What\u2019s Your Story? has always been exactly about this.\u00a0 It encourages youth agency.\u00a0 It promotes the positive use of technology (video-making and connecting through social networks).\u00a0 But what it hadn\u2019t done until now was encourage a discussion beyond \u201cthe absence of war.\u201d\u00a0 We wanted to change that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>What To Do vs. What Not To Do<a href=\"http:\/\/whatsyourstory.trendmicro.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-643\" title=\"WYS2013_WebBanner_348x348\" src=\"\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/WYS2013_WebBanner_348x348-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/WYS2013_WebBanner_348x348-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/WYS2013_WebBanner_348x348-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/WYS2013_WebBanner_348x348.png 348w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">We believe that for every negative news story about kids, technology and ensuing mayhem, there are many more opposing examples.\u00a0 We just don\u2019t hear about them. \u00a0This year, we want to see and hear about how people, particularly the youngest of us, are being great at being online.\u00a0 This year, the What\u2019s Your Story? contestants just need to answer one question: <strong>What does the good side of the Internet look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Being great at being online can mean a lot of things.\u00a0 It can mean being safe.\u00a0 It can mean being responsible.\u00a0 It can mean doing both and more. \u00a0It can happen when \u00a0texting, tweeting, friending, gaming, blogging, shopping, sharing photos, or finding music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Ultimately, we believe this is a better way to help others be safe, responsible, successful users of technology.\u00a0 Let\u2019s move beyond telling them what not to do, a theme that pervades most messaging directed at youth on the Internet.\u00a0 Instead, let\u2019s provide the stage and let them show others what works, what\u2019s possible.\u00a0 We hope that these stories of smart, creative, safe, responsible, productive uses of the Internet might encourage and inspire others to do the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Youth market research firm YPulse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ypulse.com\/post\/view\/creating-social-change-with-a-click\">recently wrote<\/a> about the attitudes and beliefs of millennials (those born between 1982 and 2004) that \u201cthere is huge momentum to pay it forward lately, and pass on positivity. \u00a0Millennials are eager to participate in this chain reaction and exhibit acts of kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\">We believe this.\u00a0 In fact, we\u2019re banking $20,000+ on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>For more information about this year\u2019s What\u2019s Your Story?
