{"id":1493,"date":"2020-02-06T19:41:42","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T03:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internetsafety.trendmicro.com\/?p=1493"},"modified":"2021-09-21T09:25:46","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T17:25:46","slug":"facebook-now-shows-us-what-were-doing-off-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/internet-safety\/blog\/facebook-now-shows-us-what-were-doing-off-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook Now Shows Us What We\u2019re Doing Off-Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221;]<br \/>\n\t\t\t[et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221;]<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t[et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221;]By Lynette Owens<\/p>\n<p>On the heels of Data Privacy Day last week, Facebook introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/1\/28\/21112380\/facebook-activity-tool-data\">\u201cOff-Facebook Activity\u201d tool<\/a>, which shows you all of the businesses and apps that give information about you to Facebook. \u00a0This information seems to be collected by those 3<sup>rd<\/sup> parties whether or not you were using FB in any way to log into, visit or use those sites\/apps.\u00a0 They simply have a business relationship of some kind, which results in the collection and sharing of information about you.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to Facebook for providing this information and giving us tools to further manage our privacy.\u00a0 While we have consistently pushed for more transparency, it is still appalling to see all the businesses that collect, sell and use our personal information for their own gain.\u00a0 Although everyone is entitled to their own opinion and may feel differently\/indifferent about this, it is important to know that you all have some choice now in the matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take back some control <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want Facebook storing this information about you with your Facebook account, go to the tool and turn it off today! Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<p>Visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Foff_facebook_activity%2F&amp;data=02%7C01%7Cmtrocchio%40we-worldwide.com%7C09052bdea84b493ea78708d7a4cbc728%7C3ed60ab455674971a5341a5f0f7cc7f5%7C0%7C0%7C637159067443604902&amp;sdata=2ez2WF76fsYZDvhjdC69vpFE6IQmrp7j3uxZQDDAT5g%3D&amp;reserved=0\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/off_facebook_activity\/<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manage your Off-Facebook Activity;<\/li>\n<li>You may be prompted for a password;<\/li>\n<li>You will then see the list of businesses who have given information about you to Facebook (because of some business relationship they have);<\/li>\n<li>Clear History; and then finally<\/li>\n<li>Manage Future Activity \u2013 <strong><u>Turn it off.<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be clear &#8211; this won\u2019t stop Facebook from getting that data about you in the future (unless you stop doing business with all the sites\/apps listed) or from them using it to target advertising to you. But if you turn it off, it will no longer be attached to your Facebook account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a good step by Facebook. \u00a0But like every other technical act to promote online privacy, it remains to be seen what they will do to make sure every user knows about this tool and how to use it.<\/p>\n<p>It will also be interesting to see how their advertisers respond to this increasing transparency and control for users. When I saw the list of apps and companies in my Off-Facebook activity, I definitely had a negative reaction and considered removing those apps or discontinuing my relationship with those companies\u2019 websites, some of which I didn\u2019t even remember I had previously interacted with.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, who\u2019s next?
