Beyond Perimeter Defense to Data-Centric Security

Traditionally businesses have focused their IT security on perimeter defense—blocking threats before they enter the network. This protection is still important. But with today’s cloud computing, mobile devices, and advanced persistent threats (APTs), businesses need security that protects their data wherever it travels and in whatever type of device it resides, requiring new data-centric security.
Earlier this week, Trend Micro held its annual insight event for the analyst community and announced our new vision on data-centric security (see video clips of the event here). Back in 2008, Trend Micro launched our Smart Protection Network which correlates cloud-based email, web, and file reputation services. This global threat intelligence blocks threats before they enter the network. But with targeted attacks as well as cloud computing and mobile devices expanding network perimeters, companies need more than this “outside-in” approach to security. Businesses also need “inside-out” protection that focuses on the data. So we have made our Smart Protection Network even smarter—providing adaptable protection on the local level as well as from the cloud.
For businesses this means new sensors will be added to Trend Micro products that collect local threat intelligence and context-aware data usage (who, what, where, when) to create customized data protection. And this protection will be provided in a unified framework with a centralized view across the network along with policy and action options. By combining global threat intelligence and customized local protection, the new Smart Protection Network enables companies to create effective data usage policies and detect possible data breaches, even from advanced persistent threats, zero-day malware, or targeted attacks.
Trend Micro’s CEO, Eva Chen, gave a presentation on cloud computing at VMworld Las Vegas.
