Challenges

Taking security very seriously, Cybage Software uses world-class products from various vendors to ensure maximum protection against vulnerabilities. All of their endpoints have been secured, a gateway-level firewall has been put in place, and functionalities like content URL filtering and data loss prevention (DLP) ensure that leaks are systematically detected and blocked. However, none of Cybage Software’s incumbent vendors could provide adequate support for its Linux® platform.

“Securing our Linux-based servers from hosting infected files was a major priority for us,” notes Satish Kharat, head of information systems and security, Cybage Software Pvt. Ltd. “We needed a solution that could offer comprehensive protection and end-to-end coverage for all of our Linux servers. As a fairly large organisation with over 6,300 employees, downtime can prove to be extremely expensive.” Kharat goes on to explain, “We always wanted to ensure that our mission-critical components remained available. Conventional patching disrupts operations and we wanted to avoid that through virtual patching.”

Why Trend Micro

“We analysed a number of options from various players before finally choosing Trend Micro™ Deep Security™,” says Kharat.

Trend Micro offered exhaustive coverage and comprehensive protection, making it the product of choice. Certifications from all major Linux vendors, as well as independent third parties further corroborated the solution’s stability and reliability. Based on a proof of concept, Cybage Software decided to implement Deep Security across 100 servers. Since the company had an in-house IT team and the solution itself was easy to deploy, Cybage Software handled the entire deployment internally.

“We were able to get up and running in about a month,” notes Kharat. “The Trend Micro team was always available on hand to provide support and guidance, and the solution itself was easy to use. In fact, since implementation over a year ago, we haven’t had any reason to raise a ticket.”

Solution

Deep Security offers a consolidated security approach that can detect, protect, and respond to the constantly evolving threat landscape. With comprehensive protection for on-premises data centres, it prevents the spread of viruses, spyware, and other threats to various internal and external endpoints. The solution also integrates well with existing applications.

“As an organisation, we have adopted a multi-vendor approach to our IT environment and we have a number of stand-alone IT solutions,” says Kharat. “Trend Micro seamlessly manages to keep operations from all these vendors running smoothly. The console comes with a completely customisable dashboard that allows us to closely monitor the status of each layer of security-anti-malware, web reputation, firewall, integrity monitoring, and intrusion prevention-in a single pane of glass.”

Deep Security currently supports over 1,500 kernels of Linux at Cybage Software, making processes faster and more efficient.

Results

On average, a single data breach can cost a company several thousands to millions of dollars. Deep Security leverages proven security controls and enables proactive, context-based protection across the enterprise system. By applying virtual patches to servers and applications, it shields servers until a patch can be applied.

“With virtual patching, we have been able to take a systematic approach to patching, scheduling it as needed and when it’s most suitable for us, rather than rushing to find a solution under the threat of an attack,” says Kharat. “We have also been able to prevent unauthorised software changes and stop the execution of unknown and unwanted applications, eliminate the operational pains and downtime of emergency patching, and reduce the risk of breach disclosure costs.”

What's Next?

Trend Micro has proposed that Cybage Software evaluate its endpoint security solution, directing them to look at Trend Micro Apex One™ to eliminate security gaps and stop threats across the entire organisation.

“Apex One will help leverage a blend of cross-generational threat techniques to provide protection against all types of threats. This will further strengthen our endpoints’ security posture by using a host-based intrusion prevention system that would provide real-time visibility into activities on our servers,” says Kharat.
