Overview

The First Team Real Estate Family of Companies is one of the largest full-service residential real estate companies in Southern California. The company has 38 affiliated offices across the region, with 2,000 contracted independent agents, all of whom use their own computer equipment. Trend Micro secures 750 endpoints for the enterprise.

The company’s IT infrastructure is made up of 150 servers, running a mix of Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 and Windows Server 2016; and has disaster recovery facilities in Amazon Web Services (AWS). First Team also uses on-premises Microsoft® Exchange Server 2016 and a few cloud-based applications. As well, the company has a hybrid installation of Citrix®, most of which is in the cloud, and runs VMware® in its data center.

Challenges

First Team needed to protect a wide range of endpoints. “Our customers include independent agents, as well as their buyers and sellers. All of these users bring their own devices, so the potential for a security issue is always present. We have to ensure our customers and clients are protected, so we must protect our own assets,” said Jim Loges, director of IT operations at First Team Real Estate.

Additionally, meeting its security needs on so many diverse endpoints was too large of a task. It needed a partner that could supply robust support and help educate users about data security. Lastly, to meet its compliance needs, First Team required visibility, detail, and manageability that its original security provider did not offer.

Why Trend Micro

First Team was already impressed with Trend Micro’s reputation of resilience, staying one step ahead of the next threats. As the relationship with its previous security provider was coming to an end, they invited Trend Micro back for a proof of concept.

Solutions

First Team chose Trend Micro Smart Protection Complete because the comprehensive suite covers all of its independent contractors. The vulnerability and malware protection provided by Smart Protection Complete ensures that patches are deployed consistently to all endpoints.

With Trend Micro Apex One, First Team can provide support across its independent contractors’ various platforms. Trend Micro Deep Security protects data both onpremises and on cloud platforms, including AWS. Given its current reliance on a mix of physical servers and AWS, First Team had to make sure that its security solution would support both, even though it would only secure the data center environment with Deep Security to start. “Trend Micro stands behind us on a variety of different platforms, from remote computers to the Amazon cloud. That’s hard to find,” said Loges.

Unlike First Team’s previous vendor, Trend Micro offers the compliance tools First Team required. Deep Security helps First Team comply with regulatory requirements by allowing them to set up testing areas for auditors. The company can create various threat scenarios and demonstrate how Trend Micro is working to eradicate them.

Trend Micro also offers significant customization assistance, which is a big plus for First Team. The Trend Micro team was able to explain the customization process thoroughly and encouraged First Team’s managers to take advantage of its support desk for additional help.

Since installing Trend Micro two years ago, First Team managers get comprehensive reports and data from the Trend Micro dashboard—all of the information they need.

With Trend Micro solutions, First Team has greatly enhanced its IT security efficiency. Now they can close help desk tickets much faster, allowing issues to be escalated promptly and helping managers deploy information quickly to support staff.
