Community National Bank (CNB) is a locally-owned community bank based in Midland, Texas. Established in 1984, the bank provides outstanding customer experiences to clients in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Midland, Odessa, and Stanton communities. Most of the bank’s customers are commercial entities involved in the oil and gas industry.
CNB originally outsourced its IT functions to a managed service provider. As cybersecurity threats grew in complexity and IT became more critical to the organization’s mission, the bank promoted Amanda Tremble to information systems supervisor and moved its IT operations in-house.
Banks are prime targets for cyber criminals, so security is a priority for CNB. As the bank grew, its original security solution began to slow other bank IT systems down during times of peak demand, and it lacked the data visibility the bank required. Because banks are heavily regulated, the CNB team also needed easy access to reports and other data to validate compliance. To meet these critical requirements, Tremble sought a more robust solution to meet the bank’s security and reporting needs while allowing it to provide excellent service to its customers.
CNB was also concerned with targeted cyberattacks that are designed to evade standard security solutions. With the intensity of attacks against financial institutions increasing, IT management sought to build a more complete, layered security approach for CNB. It needed a strategy where every layer worked with the others seamlessly to protect the bank on every level.

Why Trend Micro
In 2014, CNB acquired a competitor’s IT team, inheriting Trend Micro™ Smart Protection Suite for the endpoints from their previous outsourced IT provider. CNB decided to keep Trend Micro after it saw the effectiveness of the solution to eliminate security gaps across endpoints. Right from the start, Tremble was impressed with the quality of technical support from Trend Micro. “Trend Micro has always been there for me,” said Tremble. “With Trend, there is always someone to answer my question or direct me. In my world, that level of support is essential.”
With a global leader in endpoint protection in place, CNB started to look for a turnkey appliance that could help her team analyze and detect targeted attacks. When they learned about Trend Micro™ Deep Discovery™ Analyzer with XGen™ security, Tremble knew she wanted to work with Trend Micro. “We already had Trend Micro in place protecting our endpoints. It made sense to build on that to create a layered approach to security. The sandbox technology and reporting is amazing,” said Tremble.
To achieve the layered security that CNB required, the bank implemented Deep Discovery Analyzer to detect targeted attacks designed to evade standard security solutions. Deep Discovery Analyzer applies cross-generational techniques to ensure the highest detection rate with the lowest false positives. The solution includes web filtering with URL reputation, behavioral analysis, machine-learning optimization, and much more.
CNB also implemented other components of the Trend Micro Smart Protection Suite such as Trend Micro Control Manager™ to improve visibility and protection, reduce complexity, and eliminate redundant security administration tasks. CNB also added Trend Micro™ InterScan™ Messaging Security to block spam, phishing, and advanced persistent threats.

Deep Discovery Analyzer was a game-changer for CNB. “After implementing Deep Discovery Analyzer, we realized 10 to 20 malicious emails with attachments containing macros and serious threats a month were trying to get through our systems. Deep Discovery Analyzer caught them all,” said Tremble
Reports from Control Manager help the team better prepare for board meetings, regulatory filings, and audits. “Any cybersecurity threats or attempts to hack our systems are all documented,” said Tremble. “We can see exactly what happened and how the threat was mitigated.”
Thanks to Trend Micro products and support, Tremble and her team can now focus on more strategic tasks. “Trend Micro works,” she said. “They will show you how it works, and then they will deliver on what they tell you.”
CNB plans to continue partnering with Trend Micro to expand its security strategy as the bank grows. Tremble’s team will conduct a Trend Micro™ TippingPoint™ threat protection system proof of concept soon, and they are investigating the use of Trend Micro™ ScanMail™, Trend Micro Apex One™, and Trend Micro™ Writing Style DNA to prevent business email compromise attacks.
