Teams up with Trend Micro to launch Hong Kong’s first all-in-one home gateway

Overview

HKBN is Hong Kong’s second largest provider of residential high-speed fibre broadband services and a fast-growing enterprise solutions provider. It offers a wide range of telecommunications solutions for both residential and enterprise markets, including broadband and managed Wi-Fi services, voice communication, mobile services, OTT entertainment, data centre services, integrated cloud services, data connectivity, and system integration. HKBN’s extensive fibre network in Hong Kong covers over 2.3 million residential homes and 2,400 commercial buildings.

Challenges

Hong Kong is always a target for hackers. According to the hacking statistics compiled by Trend Micro across 172 regions worldwide, Hong Kong ranked fourth highest for hacking attacks, with 995,971 attacks recorded in September 2018 alone. In the internet of things (IoT) era, in addition to computers and mobile phones, more and more smart devices such as network-connected cameras, sensors, and even smart door locks, may be susceptible to malware intrusion, monitoring or even eavesdropping. With that in mind, HKBN knew they needed a security partner that could ensure they had the right security to protect their customers home networks now, and in the future.

Why Trend Micro

HKBN decided to team up with Trend Micro to launch Hong Kong’s first all-in-one Home Gateway, bringing together 2Gbps of bandwidth on a single fibre broadband network, home network security, parental control, home Wi-Fi, and telephone service in one easy-to-use device.

Solutions

With Trend Micro providing advanced home network security service through Trend Micro Smart Home Network™, HKBN is able to deliver a new paradigm in protection for all devices connected to the home network via its HKBN HomeGuard - Network Security.

Unlike the security software typically provided for individual devices, this embedded network security solution is designed to detect, analyze, and protect against external attacks and malicious network activities, and block unsafe websites and files.

The advanced deep pack inspection (DPI) technology offers three-tier protection against common attacks and network intrusions for all devices connected to Home Gateway. To guard against the latest cyberattacks, Trend Micro will regularly update the latest list of dangerous websites and malware in its system.

"Blocking attacks at the home network level effectively enhances home security, which is becoming an important new trend for the future. We are very pleased to work with HKBN to provide enterprise-level network security to homes across Hong Kong."

We are very pleased to work with HKBN to provide enterprise-level network security to homes across Hong Kong, allowing families to stay connected on the Internet with peace of mind.”

Trend Micro’s flexibility during development allowed for a smooth process and a great final product, which became available on November 29, 2018.
