At the crossroads of Bourgogne and Rhône-Alpes, the Mâcon Hospital Centre serves a population of more than 210,000 people. With support from the Territory Hospital Group of southern Bourgogne, it offers a full array of medical care from general medicine and surgery to psychiatry and long-term care. It integrates hospital services with dependent senior living facilities, as well as an Institute for Training in Nursing Care. The hospital centre has 1,014 beds and employs more than 2,000 medical and non- medical professionals.
Like many healthcare establishments, the Mâcon Hospital Centre is a target for ransomware and other malware attacks. Three powerful attacks solidified awareness of the need to prepare for the increasing complexity of threats. “The last attack directly affected our patients,” said Jean-Christophe Tamboloni, director of information systems at Mâcon Hospital Centre. “We needed to act quickly and invest in new, proven security solutions to avoid similar disruptions in the future.”
The hospital’s challenge was to protect its continuum of care as well as the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive patient data while adhering to regulatory requirements, including the recent European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Why Trend Micro
Building on a 10-year long relationship, the Mâcon Hospital Centre turned to Trend Micro to find the right solutions to defend against attacks. Together, they planned to consolidate IT systems to improve security and visibility for more than 50 clinical, technical, and support applications across 1,800 workstations and 400 virtual machines.
"We were not only impressed by the performance of the solutions, but by the responsiveness, availability and competence of the Trend Micro teams. They knew how to support us and understood our sense of urgency."

Trend Micro™ Hosted Email Security™ was chosen as the messaging system for its real-time protection against spam, malware, phishing attacks, and advanced threats. The messaging server is secured with Trend Micro™ ScanMail™ Suite for Microsoft® Exchange™ to stop traditional malware as well as targeted attacks and advanced threats.
Next, they secured the physical and virtual Citrix servers with Trend Micro™ Deep Security™. It protects unpatched servers from vulnerabilities, conducts real-time monitoring, and automatically detects and blocks threats.
Trend Micro™ OfficeScan, powered by XGen™ security protects workstations. It uses machine learning and behavioral analysis to identify and neutralise the encryption process specific to ransomware. Trend Micro Mobile Security protects mobile devices and applications.
In addition, Trend Micro™ Deep Discovery™ Analyser improves malware detection for all of the security solutions and enables automation of security tasks.
Implementation of the solutions was fast. Three months after the Trend Micro team’s first visit, the security solutions were up and running—and without a production shutdown. The quick installation and automatic updates brought immediate results and continue to provide protection against constantly evolving threats.
With a single administration console simplifying security management, these innovative solutions give the hospital an integrated and secure infrastructure for detecting and neutralising threats. In addition, with Trend Micro as a part of their GDPR compliance strategy, the hospital is confident that they will be ready for the May 25, 2018 deadline.
"The products impressed us with their performance. The advanced solutions immediately blocked an impressive number of cryptolocker ransomware attempts."
