In 1909, Louis Glazer began distributing flavored soda waters from the back of horsedrawn wagons in Dallas, Texas. This started a company that would one day become Glazer’s, Inc. In 2016, Glazer’s, Inc.’s wine and spirits business became part of Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, LLC. At the same time, Glazer’s Beer and Beverage was created to operate Glazer’s malt beverage distribution business, and today, Glazer’s operates in five states across the southern U.S.
Glazer’s has grown significantly over the past two years and currently has about 800 end users, including a mobile sales team that uses wireless tablets in the field. The company’s growth and new acquisitions led the security team to focus on reducing risks and unifying security across the organisation. “Hearing about attacks on companies in our industry brought more attention to our security risks and reminded us of how critical it is to fully protect our systems and data,” says Derek Mouriz, Senior IT Manager at Glazer‘s.
Glazer’s uses a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform hosted by a third party. “We interact with that application daily, but because it’s hosted elsewhere, we lack insight and control into its security protections. That makes it more critical to shore up security on our side,” says Aaron Cunningham, Vice President of Information Technology at Glazer’s.
The company is growing, yet they maintain a small IT security team. “We’ve added about 250 employees over the last two years. That means our small team has more people and data to protect. Our end users are the first and last line of defence, so keeping them educated and protected is crucial. With the uptick in spear phishing and ransomware attacks happening to other businesses like ours, we focused on strengthening our security stack,” says Mouriz.

More recently, Glazer’s further bolstered their security protection without increasing overhead by adding Trend Micro XDR to provide detection and response across email, endpoints, servers, cloud workloads, and networks. XDR’s ability to connect all these vectors, correlate data with powerful security analytics, and provide integrated investigation and response was a big selling point. “Listening to peers who had experienced ransomware attacks, we knew XDR made sense. Trend Micro XDR paints a picture, telling you which solutions mitigate issues. When I first saw XDR, there was so much detailed data. The way it allowed me to drill down was amazing,” says Cunningham.
Glazer’s also uses Trend Micro Apex One SaaS to protect endpoints and Trend Micro Cloud App Security to protect their cloud applications. “We try to stay within the Microsoft ecosystem, and Cloud App Security ties all that together for us. Microsoft has security protection built into it, but it’s even better to have Trend Micro tightly integrated into our platform to monitor and proactively stop attacks,” says Mouriz. Cloud App Security also helped Glazer’s manage remote workers when the COVID-19 pandemic sent employees to work from home. “We haven’t had to think about endpoint security or cloud application security since we went remote. It just works,” says Mouriz.

“Trend Micro is a force multiplier for us. It gives our small security team peace of mind. We can add employees and infrastructure and handle it all without expanding our security team,” says Cunningham.
Automation and a wealth of data also translates to time savings. “With XDR, we can see when an email account was compromised, who got the mail, who clicked on it, and so on. XDR also removes that email from everyone’s inbox before they even know it’s there. It used to take one or two people half a day to mitigate something like that. Now it takes one person less than an hour,” says Mouriz.
Finally, Trend Micro is helping Glazer’s educate new employees with Trend Micro Phish Insight, a free cloud-based security awareness service. “When we first started using Phish Insights, we saw about 20% of our employees fall for phishing attacks. That’s now down to under 10%,” says Mouriz.
As Glazer’s grows and acquires new companies, Trend Micro solutions will be key to ensuring that new employees and infrastructures are fully protected. “We’ll be able to snap Trend Micro products seamlessly into new environments so we can fully protect our systems and employees no matter what devices or systems they use,” says Cunningham.
